Well, since the stations will be in the downtown areas, not very long.Compare this to the required time it takes to get to just about any airport in the country to catch a flight. For example, it takes me 4-5 hours for me to get to Newark from where I live, in Putnam County, NY. This includes factoring in the required 1.5>2 hours check-in and security procedures, something that boarding a train doesn't require. So your argument doesn't hold water. |

Don't forget that Dallas has extensive light rail lines which all go to Union Station,one stop away from the convention center. From Ft. Worth a passenger can take TRE to Dallas Union Station in one hour. From a typical north Dallas suburb it's a 30 - 45 minute ride on DART. From further north a passenger could ride to the northernmost DART stop or ride the Denton A Train to Carrollton and transfer to DART. |

Or so you would have discovered had you bothered to check your geography.Also, if you study your geography, you'll observe that DFW is some 20 miles west of downtown Dallas. Union Station is right in downtown Dallas. Now suppose, then, just for the sake of argument, that a resident of Plano (about 20 miles north of Dallas) had the choice of flying from Dallas to Houston, or taking the train from Dallas to Houston. He/she would have a 27-mile, up to an hour-long fight on the freeways to get to DFW, find parking, wait in the check-in line, wait in the security line, and then wait about 45 min/1 hr before boarding. And hope there's not a 45min wait on the tarmac for clearance to take off. Now, suppose he/she choose to get to the downtown Dallas station. This would entail about a 47-mionut ride on the Dallas DART LRT Red Line, where the passenger could relax, read, enjoy the scenery and the environment through which the light rail train passes. He/she would simply arrive at Union Station, no 1.5-hour check-in procedure, minimal wait time before boarding. The train would then take just a few minutes before reaching its own right-of-way with no interference from freight trains. If I were that person, I'd choose the train. Wouldn't you? Now if you happened to live closer to DFW, say, in Las Colinas, you would still save time by taking the train from downtown to Houston, for the reasons I spelled out in the previous paragraph. DART's Orange Line, BTW, gives you a choice of going to downtown Dallas, or to DFW. BTW, you have never apologized for accusing Maya Angelou of being anti-Semitic. (This came up on a post I originated about two years ago on SubChat, after she died, where she was honored by, of all systems, the Dallas DART transit agency, for her work as a San Francisco Market Street Railway conductor, one of the first blacks on any transit system anywhere.) When I challenged you to provide proof, there was dead bandwidth on your part. |

Well ... it was the organizer's thing. Having grown up poor myself, I know what it's like to want to get on the path and not having the cash to even start. That's why I'm proud of what I've accomplished given where I started out. But it was hard. Anybody who's willing to help others get there under similar circumstances has my encouragement despite the politics of those who step up in the first place.Neither the Panthers or NOI folks accepted me at first until I managed to prove that I was "for reals" ... given my experience, I'm willing to give latitude on the simple basis of trying at all. |
