Tuscarora Almanac - May 26, 1935 - The Book of First Runs

The Newark City Subway opened today between Broad Street and Heller Parkway. It was built utilizing the roadbed of the former Morris and Essex Canal for the outdoor sections and a new subway in downtown Newark.

Thanks!! I rode that line 1999, just before the PCCs were retired. It was neat indeed.

I thought the subway portion under Raymond Blvd. was also built in the old canal bed, but covered over by the new roadway all the way to the then new Penn Station (which was completed in 1937).

Rode the NCS PCC's all day on last day in August 2001. Got to see alot of cool stuff that wasn't part of the closing day festivities.

I also think that was the case. In downtown Newark, the covering over the canal bed turned subway became Raymond Blvd named, I believe, for a former mayor of Newark.

Hard to believe the PCCs were retired almost 14 years ago.

I don't believe that my computer skills are that good. I'm grateful to Larry for maintaining this web-site. The list has grown to the point where it needs to be cross-referenced. My next projects will include the Manhattan Railway Lines. The Elkeeper should like that.

Jan: I believe that the subway did follow the canal from Broad Street westward. The sources I consulted where somewhat ambiguous on this point. If you have or known of a reliable source on the construction of the subway please let me know.

I'm not good at making proper links.
I'll look for some more of the construction photos online.

Jan: I saved the above references , thank you. There has always been a paucity of information about detailed construction of the Newark City Subway. We have volumes of information about every line, station, platform and stairway on the new York Subway System but not so much on the Newark System.

I'll ask Jeff Marinoff, he'd definitely know where to find the construction photos of the Newark City Subway line that haven't been already been published. He might even have the original prints.

Hi Larry - Bill McKelvey of the Liberty Historic Railway confirms that the entire original Newark City Subway from Franklin Ave to Penn Station was built in the bed of the Morris Canal, including the subway portion under what is now Raymond Blvd. He's got a slide collection of the reconstruction that shows the transition. There's a book The Morris Canal that has many of the shots also.

The portion between Broad Street an Penn Station was a later addition, when Penn Station was built.
