I thought the subway portion under Raymond Blvd. was also built in the old canal bed, but covered over by the new roadway all the way to the then new Penn Station (which was completed in 1937).Rode the NCS PCC's all day on last day in August 2001. Got to see alot of cool stuff that wasn't part of the closing day festivities. |

I also think that was the case. In downtown Newark, the covering over the canal bed turned subway became Raymond Blvd named, I believe, for a former mayor of Newark. |

Hi Larry - Bill McKelvey of the Liberty Historic Railway confirms that the entire original Newark City Subway from Franklin Ave to Penn Station was built in the bed of the Morris Canal, including the subway portion under what is now Raymond Blvd. He's got a slide collection of the reconstruction that shows the transition. There's a book The Morris Canal that has many of the shots also. |
