Hi Larry - Bill McKelvey of the Liberty Historic Railway confirms that the entire original Newark City Subway from Franklin Ave to Penn Station was built in the bed of the Morris Canal, including the subway portion under what is now Raymond Blvd. He's got a slide collection of the reconstruction that shows the transition. There's a book The Morris Canal that has many of the shots also.
