Japan has it right: there is no concept of gratuity. However, a customer will usually not complain about poor service - they simply will never return, and may advise their co workers as well. So if service is regularly poor, a restaurant will lose a significant amount of business and may have to close. Thus, everyone provides the best service they can because they know the *only* feedback they will get is a reduction in customers. |

Piedmont food service would work just fine on a typical Regional train. They offered (and still do) sit down meal service in that lounge car, but it is and has been an Amfleet or Horizon (or perhaps earlier on Heritage) lounge car in which that service was offered. |

Some owners of establishments aren't particularly vigilant in making sure that no customer makes the gaffe of tipping the owner. :)I went a few times to a haircutting establishment where I knew my hair was being cut by the owner and he asked in some kind of semi-subtle way whether my payment was including a tip or not (I think I gave him a round sum of money more than the price and he asked if I wanted change). |

I guess for the few times I went east from here, it was the exception rather than the rule then after the mid-90's. Prior to then, coming FROM Boston, there was almost always a diner which would get turned or would continue on. But like you point out, all depends on the train - it varies. |

Seriously? On a few trips out of Boston on the ONLY train that runs to Albany from there, they often had a DINER on the consist. Now go back and read what I said before. It almost ALWAYS went back to Boston if it was in the consist out of Rensselaer *WHEN* there was a diner on it. See this? THAT'S a diner car. It has tables and seats. All of the other arrangements, if you're lucky, has maybe a shelf opposite where they serve SNACKS if there's anything at all offered. Just because you never did it, or any of your "friends" never did it, doesn't mean that it never happened. I said that I had a SIT DOWN meal. Hardly. :(We're dealing with foamers and idiots here who INSIST that just like there's always an R68-something on the D train, then Amtrak will always make up the same consist for each train every time. :) I've only ridden into here from Boston maybe 12 times since 1976. There was USUALLY a diner car since the Boston section of the Lake Shore usually arrives here just around dinner time these days. It USED to be a lot later and with an 8'ish hookup here to head west, passengers would be MIGHTY grumpy after the 5+ hour trip across CSX' rails if they couldn't eat until they got here. But hey ... what do I know? I guess I never tipped those waiters and should get my money back after a fine meal. (grin) WHICH diner went west (when there WAS one) might have been as simple as making sure that ONE diner car managed to make it to Chicago. Amtrak's been through a lot of shit over the years, and protecting your premiere train can take many forms around here. Folks who are NOT from the city don't piss and moan, they reach for their gun. ;) But no sense arguing with know-it-alls who actually believe that the universe started when they were breech-birthed. Heh. |

But that sit down meal you had was likely on a Horizon or Amfleet II dinette/lounge. They are regularly used for such on the Lake Shore Boston segment, Cardinal, and in a pinch elsewhere should there not be enough Heritage Diners available.Neither Boston nor Albany has a commissary for dining cars. I believe the expenses associated with such were a big part of why the Silver Meteor was not extended to Boston from NYP in the late 1990s. I'll work out the numbers for earlier years later, but the spare factor of the Heritage dining fleet has not been such which would allow 2 additional Heritage dining cars to shuttle between Albany and Boston at any time in the last decade. In fact, it was low enough that the Lake Shore had to settle with two Lounge cars for a few years around 2008 where one of the two acted as Dining car. I honestly don't know what specific iteration of dining service you are recalling to, but if it was after 1980, the actual car it was provided in was a lounge of some kind. |

They may have mimicked a dining car, but a conventional 48-seat diner it was not. There was a proposal in the late 1990's to reintroduce the Broadway Ltd (realized the Downs/Mercer cuts were stupid), run the Lake Shore as a full service train to Boston and NO NY section. Lack of a Boston Diner Commissary and no easy way to cycle the car to Hialeah for maintenance was the reason it was nixed. |

Just to throw a few numbers out there:In 1990, there were 32 active diners(Counting the car with a kitchen as a dining car for Amtrak's home made Florida twin units). At the time, requirements for Single Level Dining car service were IINM: 7 for Silver service 4 for Auto train(2 per consist) 4 for the Crescent 2 for the Cardinal 3 for the Broadway Limited 3 for the New York Lake Shore 3 for the Capitol Limited (Designated as a tray meal service, so it could have used a lounge, however I have seen photos of this train with a dining car around then) Adding 2 for the Boston section of the Lake shore would have been problematic, especially as the then single level and dinerless City of New Orleans needed them had they been available. In 2001, there were 23-26 active Single level dining cars 12 for Silver service 4 for the Crescent 3 for the New York Lake Shore With 7 spares 2 to Boston is theoretically more possible, but at the time they were rebuilding the Heritage diners so fewer were available than appeared. This was also about when I started riding the Boston section of the Lake Shore, and it never had Dining cars then. |

The one I see on the Ethan Allen only has shelves opposite the "bar" where you can put your food down if you want to get bumped by the line passing through. They DO have a microwave, but the feed stock for it looks rather unappealing. I usually just do a beer and some snacky thing, being careful to eat at Penn before getting on it.The usual trains though from NYP To RENS have nothing, and that's OK too. Those are usually what I'll grab out of the city. From Boston, it's the Lake Shore or a bus. |
