April 14, 1964: the last IRT low-V to run in the subways made its final run from South Ferry to 241st St- WP Road. (source: The NY Times, 4/15/1964).

Believe a few continued to run as trailers on the 3rd Ave. El in The Bronx for a few more years, but these cars never again ran underground in revenue service.

Dave Permann's site says Lo-Vs continued on the Bowling Green shuttle until August 1964. 17 Lo-V trailers, 48 WF cars, and 10 Steinways, ran on the Bronx portion of the Third Avenue until November 1969.

South Ferry to 241st St? Via Lexington Ave., right? But that was a Tuesday. Didn't the 5 only run to South Ferry on weekends?

Before the MTA route changes, the #5 ran from South ferry to Dyre Ave, from 7PM to 1AM. I always thought that Lex Thru Expresses to east 241st St ran to/from Brooklyn, mostly from Utica ave.

Correct! Museum Cars 4902 and 5655 were part of the regular contingent of old cars on the 3rd Av El, and for a time the 5 Mainline Lo-Voltage Cars.

Some Lex Thru Exps ran only to/from Bwlg Grn. In the AM rush those trains as well as selected Woodlawn trains that shortened there returned N/B to their respective terminals. There were 3 Lex Wh Pl thru exps that ran exp from 149/3 to E 180 and laid up directly from there after the last S/B thru exp cleared Brook Interlocking. In the PM there were a few S/B lex exps both from Woodlawn and the Wh Pl branch (usually put in at E 180) than ran LIGHT S/B to Bwlg Grn where they were staged in the inside loop for N/B service either to Woodlawn or 241 St as either regular or thru expresses. Although the trains terminated at Bwlg Grn, they were signed for South Ferry but since they ran light, the south destination sign was of little consequence and in any case, after the Wh Pl Rd trains arrived back at 241 St they would be operating to So/Fy since that would be the post rush service pattern. Even now there are still some east side expresses that turn at Bwlg Grn during the rush hours to provide service to the Bronx since those trains are not needed for Bkln service.

There are a few #5 trains that will arrive at 14th St NB at around 9am that are empty. I always assumed those were short turns from Bowling Green. I doubt they are to provide Bronx service, but merely to take them OOS. With the countdown clocks and/or the electronic signs to indicate it, they are also Bronx expresses. There are also #4s that terminate at Burnside, #6s that terminate at 138th. This is all happening Northbound at the tail end of the rush. They need to go somewhere.

That would be about right. Those are ;probably the Bwlg Grn short turns that are returning to their respective yards. The reason that they are empty is probably because there are very few passengers that would be picked up at stations N/O Bwlg Grn whereas trains coming from Bkln would have more passengers. I wasn’t are if the N/N AM thru exp service I mentioned was still happening but it makes sense since they really aren’t needed for local service in the Bx. I assume those trains terminate at E180.
