I think one of chippers' proposals is to have the R32's run to 96/2 when Second Ave. opens.

That would be a good trick since to my knowledge the new line will be CBTC.

I do think most of the the R32's should be retained once the R179's arrive, however you cascade equipment. Spread them around various car barns and use only rush hours.

I figure a diverted Q to SAS will eat up 4 train set sets or 40 cars.

Back filling the Astoria Q with a neo-W means 10 more train sets or 100 cars.

Send 20 R46 or R68 to SIR to reduce R44 usage to just rush hours means need for another 26 cars on the main line.

But the TA over scraps and gets ruthless with every car procurement, So I am sure they will shoot themselves in the ass and do it again.

Three hundred cars aren't enough, you're saying.
I said the very same thing when the cars were announced, got shot down by a few TA paper pushers on the inside with the whole" Why that's a bad idea/waste"...
Where are those people, now?

There will be only 40 R179 cars arranged in 5 car sets, just enough for only 4 additional trains. And, because of a production delay, the last of the R179's won't arrive until at least July 2017, seven months after Second Av is scheduled to open.

A big issue is that the Clifton shops are set up for 75' cars, not 60's: the hydraulic lifts and truck changing equipment are all based on 75' car truck centers. Moving this equipment for 60's would be difficult since it involves digging a new +20' deep pit for the equipment in a shop that is already pretty cramped. Maybe this will be addressed with the upcoming Sandy work, I'm not sure but it would make sense.

The door equipment on any cars coming to Staten Island would also need to be modified for the shorter platforms at some of the stations.

I rode that R-32 on the A about a week or so ago. I don't get to ride the A much and I actually got the spot right at the RFW. A rather enjoyable ride.

Betcha it won't open until 2019 at least. They'll need R32's in 2018, or wait until R211's arrive.

Don't see what the big deal is...the Astoria Q extension is further away than Second avenue/96th st...the same amount of cars used for the weekday service can be used for 96st.

The N by itself is inadequate for rush hour Astoria service, so they'll have to increase N service or revive the W.

Thr lifts were installed after all the 67' cars were retired. Work equipment is lifted using portable jacks something that was done post-Sandy on all cars but only of necessity (it's slower and more labor intensive compared to the lifts).

There are other issues in bringing the R160s to the SIR: all cars would need automatic couplers on both ends (no link bars). Not that big a deal in the grand scheme of things, fair enough. On the other hand a much bigger issue that may have been fixed (or will be with Sandy money) is the substations. They are/were at capacity at rush hours with the R44s. R160s, like many new cars, are power hogs. Substation capacity limitations will impact them more.

SAS to 125 will be, but from what I have seen, it appears SAS to 96/2 will be standard block signalling.

I wonder why that would be since immediately post Chrystie, the only service to Astoria was the RR and that ran with 8 car trains instead of the 600 ft trains currently used.

I don't know how many N's ran to Astoria after Chrystie, but only 6 or 7 N TPH run on the Astoria line during rush hours, which is clearly inadequate, especially on a day like today where there has been no 7 service between Queensboro Plaza and Times Square for nearly the past 2 hours because of a stalled train at Grand Central.

Don't about 4 Q's, all told, terminate at 57th St rush hours ?

I can't imagine how they can run both SAS and maintain Other-Than-N service to Astoria without R211's given how they can't wait to scrap the R32's. 4 train sets of R160's won't accomplish much.

Yes, it was the RR. I remember calling the subway info line at that time and asking them if this meant service would be reduced to Astoria. They promised me extra trains would be added. Don't know if they made good on that promise!
