I see your point. You can still get a lot of explosives into a low clearance vehicle, though. Also, enclosed places allow the explosives to do more damage. That's why trucks aren't permitted on the lower level of the GWB. After 1994 and before 9/11, the WTC delivery entrance had a very effective device that prevented trucks from entering unless a human allowed them in. I can't quickly find something like that in Google; here's the closest I could get. Movable barricade. |

Yeah, something like that to control vehicle length could work, coupled with a simple bar to restrict height, though drivers and passengers might think it simply wasn't worth the trouble. But there are other buildings in New York that people can drive under, including several built over the FDR drive, and the four apartment buildings built over I-95 approaching the GWB. Plus the already-mentioned Helmsley building. All on major roadways or (as at NYP) over a rail line. |

If you feel so strongly about this, how about writing a letter to whoever has jurisdiction here? I'm not actually sure who that would be, since Amtrak, NJ Transit, and LIRR all share the lower levels, and probably some real estate management firm is involved too. When you write the letter, however, please be sure to provide some sort of justification for your position unless you want it to find its way to the circular file very quickly. Several people here have provided some rational reasons why the taxiway should be open. You might also explain how many people each day are inconvenienced by the closure and how low the actual risk is and that someone who wants to do harm can probably do so anyway.Just be careful, though-- they just might decide to close the whole area even to pedestrians once they realize that it provides an additional entrance and exit to Penn Station New York. In any case, I really don't care-- I would never risk my life with a New York City cab driver unless I were really, really desperate and completely unable to walk. What I would really like to see restored is the mid-block crosswalk and traffic signal on 31 St that used to be located at the south end of the taxiway until some time last year. It made getting to St. John the Baptist Church much easier after I exited Penn Station from the west exit to the taxiway. Now I have to walk all the way to 7 Ave, which adds at least a minute to my walk and increases the chances that I will be late for 7:45 AM daily Mass, especially if my train is a minute or two late. For me, that crosswalk was far more useful than the taxiway ever will be even if it is reopened to traffic. |

But not under 1PP (which should be called Canada Yard) itself. This is no more dangerous than any building facing a street. If anything, the tunnel shields the building from any explosion. If the Police are so afraid of their HQ being a target, they should move it to North Brother Island and stop bothering the rest of us. |

Jaywalking is illegal. The point becomes moot as of August 1 since St. John the Baptist is merging with Holy Cross and the 7:45 AM Mass will be history after that. I'll be taking the subway to 63/Lex for 8 AM Mass at St. Vincent Ferrer and using my free transfer at 59/Lex to get to midtown on the days I need to go to Manhattan. |

Anyhow:Jaywalking is illegal.I don't think I've ever conversed with anyone who refrained from jaywalking in NYC because it is illegal. What is the reason you don't do it? Do you not do ANYTHING illegal? Are you afraid of getting a jaywalking ticket? Every time I try to get a free transfer at 59/Lex it won't give me one. Perhaps the system takes advantage of knowing where I've originally entered and decides I don't deserve a free transfer. |
