I noticed they finally put a permanent line for the taxi stand by the 32 St Entrance to Penn Station. Before it was temporary barriers. That taxi line seems to be doing fine so I don't see why they need to re-open the Taxi Roadway. That brings me to the question, where is the taxi roadway? I've heard of this but I've never seen it or what was once a possible entrance. I might go in the area today so it would be cool to check out. |

I noticed recently that the construction trailers that had resided there for the longest time were removed, which probably makes reopening it look more interesting. I am inclined to agree about the security issues at this point-- just too easy for someone to drive a car or truck bomb through there if it's open. |

First, Manhattan never had "trolleys" and second, the last example of what might erroneously be called trolleys in Manhattan ended service decades before this was opened. |

We are past the day we can run vehicles near and under buildings like that. If we had the Old Penn Station with that huge taxiway off 7th Avenue, they'd have to shut it. |

There are all those tunnels under buildings on the FDR, and in Chicago there's Congress Parkway/Eisenhower Expressway under the Post Office. |

You get taxis out on Canal Street now, not the traditional taxiway. All the Federal buildings along Dearborn Street are bordered with steel sidewalk pillars. (P.S. - it ain't a Post Office anymore) |

Those are through streets, which are a lot harder to shut down than a drop-off areas. So what's the point of shutting down the drop-off areas if you can't shut down the through streets? Suppose someone makes it into Manhattan with a Ryder truck full of explosives. OK, they won't go to Penn. They'll just head for 46th and make an illegal right turn under the Helmsley Building. And you could restrict access to Penn by having big anti-truck barricades that have to be lowered to let in a few cabs at a time. |

Queensborough Bridge, Brooklyn Bridge, 207th Street crosstown ... " Because the cars that ran solely in Manhattan got their power from the conduit, strictly speaking they were streetcars, not trolley cars. In addition to 207th Street, the short Manhattan portions of Bronx routes had overhead wire on 181st but not 125th Street. If you're including off-street terminals, in addition to the two you mentioned, you'd have to add Delancey Street. |

Most of the "anti-terrorist" measures that have become so commonplace are "security theater", just things that are done to keep the "threat" alive in people's minds. IMHO. |
