One of the biggest mistakes made in NYC history, tearing down that EL. They could have modernized or even rebuilt it. Sorely missed by east siders. Sorely missed by the whole city IMO. Who knows, it could have been made a tourist attraction. Maybe if they left it up, it could have been a "landmark" in as much as attracting Hollywood, similar to what the Loop El did for Chicago, in addition to moving the masses. |

Tearing down Els has been a serious mistake both in NYC and Chicago. Condemning a faltering neighborhood to rapid decline by destroying transit links is just dumb urban policy. |

When the el closed in May, 1955, it had received a 17 month reprieve. The City had wanted to close the el, from City Hall to 149th Street, on December 31st, 1953. Due to opposition, they closed the City Hall spur on that date, citing the construction of the new Brooklyn Bridge ramps.Ridership subsequently diminished and so did the opposition. The amputations, beginning with the Bergen Cutoff in November, 1946, had taken their final toll on May 12th, 1955. |

Definitely a huge mistake, however:As noted many times before, the El would have had to have gone under a massive rebuild in the 1960's and early '70s, especially to handle the heavier cars. That, along with making stations capable of handling AT LEAST 10 IRT-sized cars and more likely a conversion to BMT/IND standards and 600' trains would have likely led to a consolidation of stations along the El if it remained with several stations combined and/or in newer spots. One thing I do think would have happened would have been building as we saw on the east side would have proceeded if the El had been kept and rebuilt over time. It might have been slower than with the El gone, but that building was inevitable. With the building of newer, massive towers that is expected, I still think you are looking at eventually needing a full re-build of the 3rd Avenue El IN ADDITION TO the full SAS, especially with the UES the most densely populated area in arguably the entire country. |

After the el pillars and bents were completely removed, the street itself was completely repaved and widened by 10 feet. The tracks and conduits were ripped out. New, modernistic fluorescent lighting was installed, and new large street signs were put at each intersection. These were large black letters on a yellow background, which was very visible and better than the current greet signs. |

Never say never:One thing Sandy taught is that we need to re-evaluate such. My version of a rebuilt 3rd Avenue El would be designed to handle a Sandy-like storm x2. There would be two branches, one the old South Ferry branch that would eventually be joined in The Bronx by a Bronx branch of the SAS, the other what used to be the Park Row branch that would instead run from Battery Park City and the World Trade Center with provisions to later go further up Church Street (after Vesey), where it would go onto Park Row, Worth Street and then Chatam Square, running to 125th Street and Park Avenue. |

My great uncle took my from his home on Hull Ave and we walked to the 204th St station. From there, we took an AM rush hour "Q" train to Chatham Square and rode back in a set of vestibuled MUDC's. It was the second week in April of 1955 and I was on Easter vacation, as they used to call it. Not quite 7 years old, but I never forgot that trip! Also, I was fortunate to ride the "Q's" on Myrtle Ave, before its abandonment on October 4th, 1969, my 21st birthday! |

It wouldn't make sense to have converted the el to BMT/IND clearances since it was already connected to the IRT Wh Pl Rd line in at Gun Hill Rd. 10 car trains of IRT sized equipment would have been more than adequate to ease the overcrowding on the Lex. |

I was nineteen, in 69 so you've got a couple on me. I was lucky enough to ride and photograph the Q's on Myrtle Ave. during the early summer of '68. Was still taking black and white photos though.Rode by and saw the original cutoff to the Park Ave. el but didn't photograph it from the train. A picture of this was posted on subchat a few months back. Great, great, story about your 3rd Ave. el trip! Wish I had ridden it. It came down a month or so before I was five, but I'm sure if my Dad had taken me on it for a special trip, I'd certainly remember it. |

I remember seeing crews taking out small sections of track and conduit of the former cutback loop located where 3rd and 4th meet just south of Cooper Union a decade or so years ago. That was the only conduit track I knew was still around until I saw the 125th St. photos online and saw Broadway TARS tracks uptown after a pavement grinding. |
