When the el closed in May, 1955, it had received a 17 month reprieve. The City had wanted to close the el, from City Hall to 149th Street, on December 31st, 1953. Due to opposition, they closed the City Hall spur on that date, citing the construction of the new Brooklyn Bridge ramps.
Ridership subsequently diminished and so did the opposition. The amputations, beginning with the Bergen Cutoff in November, 1946, had taken their final toll on May 12th, 1955.
