Note that the evening train from Greenport is an *option*. The primary route onto which they guide the traveler is the Montauk train.A few years ago they had a North Fork package which was basically just a Greenport Scoot discount roundtrip fare and a local merchants' coupon. That didn't run for more than a summer. Greenport scoot can even be 1 car, last week's 254 sure was. Weekday service costs 2 (2 person) crews, Fridays requires one extra 3 person crew, Saturday is one 3-person crew, Sunday is one 4-person crew. Obviously only one set of equipment except on Fridays. |

Greenport and Shelter Island are pretty big seasonal weekend getaways.Sooner or later the LIRR will have to invest in upgrading the line with a passing siding and signals to handle 2 trains at once. |

But it seems to me that they're doing their best to deliberately crapify it so that in the next fiscal crisis, they can abandon it... |

Signals and PTC are coming from Ronkonkoma to Yaphank due to the growing freight traffic.Signals from Yaphank to Riverhead are on their wish list. East of Riverhead looks like it's always going to be dark territory. I don't think any interlocked passing sidings will be built. |

But they'll never stop tryin. Their using the oldest trick in the book. Make the service so shitty that no one will use it. Then the railroad says ridership is down so much, we're justified in petitioning for abandonment. Depending on who is running the MTA or who is the Gov. or the degree of influence of any North Fork politicos with juice has when this question comes to a head, that will determine the fate of the line east of Riverhead in the near futureThe MTA should look at the full Hampton Jitney busses on Rt 25 & then, with a straight face try to convince anyone who will listen that there is no railroad growth potential. If the RR had better service, HJ would be out of business. |

With the North Fork, Port Jefferson, Oyster Bay, and West Hempstead Branch, the MTA is content to leave the service in the 1950's forever. |

There are still exempt from PTC due to low train volume. That is still not an excuse from not putting a tour on the train or adding a 3rd coach. |

LIRR does not want to electrify to Port Jeff. They had money to do it in the late 1980's and blew it with lies about dual-modes ("same as electrification").There are always NIMBY's. That is not a valid excuse. |

In the late 80's, they USED that money to electrify to Ronkonkoma instead. While the Port Jeff line used to be one of the busiest lines, by the early 90's, much of that traffic had moved to the Ronkonkoma branch as those stations burst at the seems following electrification. What they need to do is electrify further there, to Yaphank or Riverhead. Ronkonkoma is the circus it is today not because "Ronkonkoma" is such a swinging place, but rather, the LIRR made that the artificial end of commuter zone. The Ronkonkoma branch canibilized the traffic from both the Montauk Branch, and the Port Jefferson branch as people drive to the nearest Ronkonkoma branch station instead. As for Ronkonkoma itself, everyone from further east goes all the way there, whereas they would go to Medford, Yaphank, or even Riverhead if normal service came from there. |

Hampton Jitney would not go out of business, as it also runs on the South Fork alongside normal railroad traffic. However, you are correct, the reason no one uses it on the North Form is because the service is utterly impossible to use. |

Not to mention Riverhead. Riverhead is exploding in suburbanization over the last 10 years, and the traffic to go with it. It's insane that there isn't a usable railroad service there. |

The NIMBYS, the ones who are not LIRR passengers, did not want it because the whole line would be double tracked with a large electric yard necessary someplace. The "someplace" was don't put it !here". |

" In the late 80's, they USED that money to electrify to Ronkonkoma instead. "No you are wrong. They had budget right AFTER Ronkonkoma to get as far as Stony Brook. Then they threw their hands up in the air and got hooked on dual-modes. |

No the whole line would not have been double-tracked. The NIMBY's fought the yards in 3 separate places and the LIRR caved. They had all they needed to electrify: CTC, 12 car high level platforms, well spaced stations and large parking lots. It would have been a cheap electrification. |
