In the late 80's, they USED that money to electrify to Ronkonkoma instead. While the Port Jeff line used to be one of the busiest lines, by the early 90's, much of that traffic had moved to the Ronkonkoma branch as those stations burst at the seems following electrification.
What they need to do is electrify further there, to Yaphank or Riverhead. Ronkonkoma is the circus it is today not because "Ronkonkoma" is such a swinging place, but rather, the LIRR made that the artificial end of commuter zone. The Ronkonkoma branch canibilized the traffic from both the Montauk Branch, and the Port Jefferson branch as people drive to the nearest Ronkonkoma branch station instead. As for Ronkonkoma itself, everyone from further east goes all the way there, whereas they would go to Medford, Yaphank, or even Riverhead if normal service came from there.
