The cars used on the 3rd Avenue Elevated after the Q cars were returned to the BMT and the MUDC cars were scrapped were Steinway cars (some Worlds Fair 1938 cars and some standard bodied cars). In service on the Flushing line they ran in trains of all motor cars but on the El they were used in five car sets with the middle car a standard Lo-V trailer. The difference was the motors and the gearing. The Steinway cars had a lower top speed since they were designed to negotiate the steep grades of the Steinway tunnels which were steeper than those of the tunnels on other IRT lines. The Steinway cars were scrapped in the late 1960's and replaced by modified R-12 cars which served the line until 1973 when it was torn down. |

Didn't some of those cars continue to run on the 3rd Av el in the Bronx after 1964, or were they other types?Victor: In typical sub-chat fashion I am going to say that the answer to your question is no and yes. The farewell train consisted of all Lo-V Low Voltage Motors, no Steinways. Five Lo-VM's were set aside for rehabilitation as the museum train. This train (5292,5290,5443,5466,5483) . This train made various fan trips around the system over the next few years. Service on the 3rd Avenue El at the time was provided by Steinway Motors, World's Fair Steinway Motors and Lo-V Trailers. At some point in 1968 (I would like to say April but I do not have the exact date.) the five museum Lo-V Motors were assigned to the el due to the Steinway Motors aging out. They remained here until all the pre-war cars were pulled from service in November 1969. Larry, RedbirdR33 |

Couldn't trust the Tea-Eh.... an R9 was scrapped that was supposed to have been preserved wassn't it?And the often repeated story of how the 5 car lo-v trainset was supposed ot have been saved from the scrapper in the first place - it was layed up, or "hidden" by a TA employee/ railfan, in one of the inner tunnels still with tackage (former NYW&B express tracks) on the Dyre Ave Line. |

They weren't Steinways b standard low numbered Lo-Vs in the 4500 series although I don't have the exact numbers. They had modified door controls that allowed for selective operation of the doors so that only the center door opened at So/Fy and all doors opened at Bwlg Grn When the Lo-Vs were retired a small dedicated fleet of R-12s was similarly equipped. In earlier days, I recall seeing a 2 car train of deck roof Hi-Vs on the shuttle since with their manual doors, they could have only the center door opened at So?Fy and all doors opened at Bwlg Grn. |

It's interesting that the deck roof cars didn't fish belly sills. Was it determined that their bodies were sturdy enough to allow the addition of center doors without compromising structural integrity? |

Unlike the Gibbs cars, the deck roofers were specifically designed with a provision to add a center door although it seems that the IRT found that the fishbelly was necessary anyhow since later standard body IRT cars had them. |

The R-1/9s were designed for multiple doors so did not need them. My guess is that they were mostly decorative since while the postwar IND/BMT cars had them, none of the IRT R types did. They eventually disappeared with the R-42s. |

Not absolutely sure, but I remember hearing something when I asked one of the C&S guys about 103 and they had stated that they were concerned about corner cracks and so later cars had them just to ensure structural integrity. Strange though that they never retrofitted the earlier car order. |

Only R-1s 100-144 didn't have sills beneath their doors. The other cars in the R-1 order had quasi-sills (look closely at 381), and the R-4s and up had sills (not to mention grab indents on the doors). |
