The cars used on the 3rd Avenue Elevated after the Q cars were returned to the BMT and the MUDC cars were scrapped were Steinway cars (some Worlds Fair 1938 cars and some standard bodied cars). In service on the Flushing line they ran in trains of all motor cars but on the El they were used in five car sets with the middle car a standard Lo-V trailer. The difference was the motors and the gearing. The Steinway cars had a lower top speed since they were designed to negotiate the steep grades of the Steinway tunnels which were steeper than those of the tunnels on other IRT lines. The Steinway cars were scrapped in the late 1960's and replaced by modified R-12 cars which served the line until 1973 when it was torn down. |
