TA connections to the national rail network |
|
Posted by WhiteBus on Tue Aug 26 17:04:59 2014 This morning I did some urban exploring along 1st Ave in Brooklyn. I had never been there before and did not know the status of this street running line. It appeared to me that this trackage is not in use, and even by the Costco Store and under the Gowanus Expwy the trackage did not seem to be used. There is tho an NS boxcar about midway along 1st Ave behind the fencing. At one time there were several TA connections with the national rail network like Parkville Jct and at New Lots Ave station on the Canarsie Line. These are long gone tho. Does the 1st Ave line represent any type of connection to the national network? That is, can this be used as a connection? I ask this because I think that new subway cars today are delivered by flatbed truck, but I may be wrong about this. Or is there a connection maybe in the Bronx that I am not aware of? Thanks. |

Two connections only that exist in the present:The connection from the D Line at 9th Avenue, which via the SBK runs to the docks. The track alignment to 1st Av and the Docks was altered over the last few years. R156 Locomotives were delivered via this connection in 2013. Linden Yard, which in fact is the replacement for the original connection to the L at New Lots. This yard, which is the track fabricating facility connects the 3, L, and the New York and Atlantic Railway. The NY and A in turn connects with the LIRR/AMTRAK/CSX and Hell Gate Route. Bombardier R142 Subway Cars were delivered from Plattsburgh NY via the freight carrier (Subway Cars that were riders themselves in a freight consist) and delivered to Linden Yard for a diesel tow to East 180th St Yard in the Bronx. I would imagine that the R179's will be delivered by freight train when the time comes. -Stef |

What you were wandering around is the South Brooklyn Railroad (subsidiary to the transit authority) and NYNJ Rail ( FKA New York Cross Harbor). This connection was temporarily deactivated due to reconstruction of the former yard west of 2nd ave. |

Some additional information about the R142 delivery: After crossing the Hell Gate bridge on flat cars, the cars were delivered to Fresh Pond Yard where the R142's were ramped down to track level (because of clearance issues in the ENY freight tunnel), then hauled by MTA diesels to Linden Shop yard. |

The new locomotives were deliveries through NY&NJ right through SBK last year. A few years ago the SIRT 44's came in through 3rd avenue for rebuild in C.I.Y. |

The only thing I couldn't remember was if the TA Diesels went to FP or not....Thought it were NY and Atlantic Diesels that pushed the cars through the gate at Linden.-Stef |

A little off this topic but at one time (maybe as late as 1980?) the SI Railway had a connection to the de-electrified north shore freight line which continued to the Arthur Kill lift bridge to New Jersey. I don't know what connections existed in NJ.When the minor league stadium was built in 2001 I believe it obliterated the one float facility the SIR had. |
