Looking for the last Myrtle el service and fan trip Q-car numbers. Anyone have this documented somewhere? I've gotten conflicting info.

Jan:Here's the information that you are looking for:

Tuscarora Almanac - October 3 - 4, 1969 - The Book of Last Runs

This is the last night of operation of BRT Q-Types wooden elevated cars. It was also the last night of operation for the Myrtle Avenue El south of Broadway.
The last train ran as an “MJ” Myrtle Avenue Local (BMT Rt. 11) and left Metropolitan Avenue at 11:38 PM, October 3. It left from Bridge-Jays Streets at 12:13 AM , October 4 and arrived back at Metropolitan Avenue at 12:43 AM. The consist was (S) 1619ABC,1616CBA. It was followed by an empty backup train with cars (S) 1613CBA,1610CBA. During the last rush hour these trains and two others were in operation. The consists of the other two trains was 1602CBA,1611CBA and 1620CBA,1629ABC. There were two post abandonment fan-trips, one on October 4 for the Electric Railroaders Association and another on October 5 for the Trolley Museum of New York. The consists on both trips was 1629ABC,1616CBA.

Nice to hear from someone who was on the last train. I was in South Dakota at the time and couldn't make it back. In October it will be 45 years.

Larry, unfortunately I wasn't on that last train but I did ride back and forth a few times in the afternoon on that last day. So there's a good chance I was on that particular train that day, just a few hours earlier. By the way, here's the souvenir I stole borrowed from that train and carried home on the Jamaica el to Sutphin, the LIRR to Hempstead, and the Hempstead Bus Company to my home in East Meadow. (At least I had a seat on those trains, LOL) I still have it.

The sad thing is the MTA did not have the foresight to instead of tearing down the Myrtle El, rebuilding it and after Navy Street have it go underground and join the Montauge Street line at what is now Jay Street-Metrotech (then Lawrence Street) or Court Street that would have allowed that line to go to Manhattan (and also potentially with some track rebuilds allow a Broadway-Brooklyn or even a Canarsie train to access lower Manhattan via a rebuilt section. That's what I would do in a rebuild of that line today.

Joe Brennan and I rode that line that afternoon too. I wonder if we were on the same train?

In October 1969 I was at UCLA, but I had ridden the line back in 1963 or 1964, when I first became seriously interested in the subways. I remember being amazed at the cars running on that line, which of course I had never before seen.

I now work at 2 MetroTech, on the south side of the Myrtle Promenade between Lawrence and Bridge Sts, and I can hardly believe that the el ever existed there.

I was surprised that it lasted that long. The neighborhoods were changing, ridership had been in a decline, and there was nothing to replace the "Q" cars. Plus, that crazy transfer at Bridge/Jay. Back in 1953, the City removed the Grand/Myrtle station because the stairways were shared by the single eastbound Lexington platform. Rather than shell out $50,000 to redo the stairs, the City cited a declining use of the Myrtle line's Grand Ave station, even with Pratt Institute there. As I said above, I'm surprised Myrtle Ave lasted till the end of 1969!
