It was closed to accommodate the restructuring of the Dekalb interlockings. It's still closed, the southbound platform is totally gone, the northbound platform is host to the Myrtle Avenue zoetrope. |

It was closed due to a reorganization of the switches north of DeKalb Avenue station, which is the next station south. Not only that but as part of the Dekalb realignment, the Dekalb platforms were extended north and a new entrance built that was close enough to the old Myrtle Av (Gold St) station that Myrtle Av station was rendered redundant. The situation was similar to the elimination of 91/Bway by the new entrance at 96 St and Worth St by the extension of Bkln Br station north. |

That was characteristic of all the 4 Av lcl stations up to 25 St. The express stations at Dekalb, Pacific and 36 St also had a tiled wall between the N/B and S/B tracks. |

It closed four months before I was born, to be exact.I remember the first time I saw that station (the bridge-bound platform, anyway). It was in July of 1967 and we were on a n/b Norton or Queasy. I was looking out the window to the right of the train when the station came into view. I remarked, "Myrtle Ave." out loud and may have said something to the effect that we weren't stopping when a guy sitting right by me said, "They closed it." |

The actual idea behind the curtain walls was to have trains in each direction renew the air in the subway envelope by a piston action forcing stale air out in front of the train and allowing "fresh" air to come in behind it. According to the pSC report on New Subways for New York, the first subway had no curtain walls at all and when trains passed, air was merely stirred up but not renewed. It was felt that by providing curtain walls between the N/B and S/B sides of the subway envelope, the air would be renewed rather than merely stirred up. Although in actual practice, curtain walls were provided only between the N/B and S/B sides, the 4 Av subway is unique in that it has curtain walls between all tracks, the only subway line in NY to have this arrangement. The consequent mitigating of the noise of passing express trains was only a colateral result of the walls being there and the stations S/O 36/4 didn't have them in the station areas themselves as the stations N/O 36 St did. |

Actually, the 14 St station on the Lex was not itself extended. What happened was that when the free transfer was opened between the IRT and the BMT, since the BMT had an entrance on 16 St even though it was on the other side of the park, the B of T felt that the entrance was close enough to 18 St station to warrant the station's closing. |

I was on the 4th Ave line a lot last December. The tile style (neat phrase, no?) is the same at 36th, Pacific, and at De Kalb. The local stations have the 1970-71 "bathroom" look, so I can't see what's really there. It seems reasonable that it would've been the same as the other stations. |

Actually, the 14 St station on the Lex was not itself extended.------------ I thought that the station platforms at the 14th Street-Union Square station WERE extended. I remember reading somewhere that the platforms were extended in such a way as to remove or modify some of the track switch setup that was at station, as well as to shift the placement of some way-side equipment. I will agree that the "station" was NOT extended for the purpose of establishing extra street entrances and exits. However the 18th Street platform seems to be very closing to the switches between the downtown local and express platforms. And yes, the entrance at 16th Street at the side of Union Square Park would be very close of the old 18th Street station entrance - so it is understandable why that station would be closed - even if it required a subway-rider to have to walk through the entire station complex to reach the #4, #5 or #6 trains. There seems to be some controversy over whether the station was actually ever called "Gold St" in actual service or had already been changed to Myrtle Av by the time it opened. In any event, the BMT road personnel always referred to it as "Gold St" and even in the current timetable editor program, the timepoint is listed as "Gold St" even though the model board in the old Gold St tower was labeled "Myrtle Avenue interlocking" and that portion of the present Dekalb Av model board also refers to it as "Myrtle Av." |

There are lots of newe buildings commercial, residential and a hotel along this corridor from Dekalb to the the entrance of the MB. It is a very long walk to for all of these new residents and workers. SOmething further north along Flatbush is totally necessary. Maybe even an underground passageway. |

Wasn't there also be a BMT subway loop at Tillary planned at one time? I think I've seen drawings for that.Might be interesting if they decide to re-open Myrtle Ave. northbound and consider reconstructing a southbound platform due to all the residential construction goig on down there. I drove through for the first time in a while yesterday and pretty much everything (warehouses, repair shops) I knew down there from the 80's is gone. The Manhattan Bridge 3 Cent line carbarn that Bridge Ford and Potter Buick (now both gone) used on Gold St. is gone too. Got kicked out of there once doing railfan archeology in the early 80's. |

After crossing the Manhattan Bridge (south side - N/Q trains), as soon as you enter the tunnel landing in Brooklyn, you see a wide openspace, most likely a trackway, coming in on the right. You all see a similar space ahead of you on the left. This was from the front window perspective. This can also be seen between DeKalb Avenue and the portal to the Manhattan Bridge (Near the abandoned Myrtle Avenue station). From a paper I bought years ago about trackways on the BMT, these bellmouths were supposed to have been a provision for turning trains (a loop). |

Nice! -- Thank you Dave for posting this and the other pictures. Looks like the columns along the platform were constructed in that cylindrical style found in the earliest IRT stations. Do any other local stops along 4th ave. have these kinds of columns? I've ridden this line but I don't remember. Also, I've been told, and other people on the board probably have also heard this - that the Myrtle Ave. station tiles (and I'd assume the station name tablets) and still in place on the wall where the former s/b platform existed prior to its removal. I think it would be a great idea for a preservation project where a segment of this tiled wall could be removed - name tablet, white tiles, and colored tile band at the wall's top, and then installed in the upper concourse of the DeKalb Ave. station, in the same way that the tilework and a name tablet from the IRT's Union Sq./ 14th St. side platform was removed and installed in the upper IRT concourse. |
