Yeah, I know ... bustini, bustini ... I *know* from other folks that I worked with back in 1970 that the tunnel is definitely there - arguments are over how FAR back it went. I've heard that there were concrete forms for a station at the other end, but no actual station, and the forms sorta ended before its "natural length" as though "abandoned in progress and backfilled" ... also heard, "it wasn't backfilled and all is there." And this was back when I worked for the EmTeeYay 35 years ago, straight from the old timers who described some of those rails still being ACTIVE when I worked there as "loops" and "layups."

Do I *believe* in 76th Street? Well ... I believe in "brotherhood of man" and "power to the people as long as NiMo can crank a hundred watts" ... but there was, even back in MY time, before the blocks filled the portal that it made the ass end of 179th look like a stadium as far as "parking" went ... and rumor had it that some LoV's got hid down there RATHER than the popular tale of Dyre fow quite some time.

What can I say? I don't KNOW the answer, but I'll listen to any evidence presented - to this day, I'm not closed of mind on it.

I was in the Euclid Ave. Tower this afternoon. There are 4 tracks shown on the model board that are used as lay-up tracks south of the station. They are shown leading to the 76th Street station which is shown on the model board as a local station. There is also an arrow pointing (east) south with the notation "to Crossbay Blvd.". Presumably, the 4-track tunnel extended or was supposed to extend at least that far east.

I didn't walk into the tunnel but I'd guess I'd come to a brick or cinderblock wall before I reached the area where the 76th Street Station would be. Likelyhood - the tunnel was excavated at the location of the station but it's also likely that the station was never built.

Yes. Many of us would like to determine that with a higher degree of certitude. Various ways of doing that have been discussed here over the years.

If one were to go to tha area, one would see where the four track area beneath the center grass mall on Conduit Blvd. it shows some subway grates. Then the grassy mall dips in it center as you head east, an indication that there is no subsurface structure.
If one heads further east to Crossbay Blvd. and observes the very straight engineered service roads leading up to and away from Crossbay Blvd on the westward side going towards Brooklyn. This is where Conduit Blvd is in the center going under Crossbay Blvd.
For most of Conduit between Crossbay and Euclid, Conduit, North and South leave a wide grassy mall for what was to be a subway.
I think the Crossbay tunnels were built at that time, in the late 1940's - early 1950's. I recall a lot of detours and road building.
Has anyone else viewed this area with a questioning eye?

"For most of Conduit between Crossbay and Euclid, Conduit, North and South leave a wide grassy mall for what was to be a subway."

"The wide median is for the aqueduct that used to be there, not the subway that never was."

Which is presumably why the street is called Conduit....

The subway was to have been under Pitkin, anyway, not Conduit. Conduit crosses Pitkin at an acute angle. Presumably the subway along Pitkin would have had to drop down to a lower level at that intersection, to get under the aqueduct, or conduit?
