It shouldn't matter if you're going to use the whole trucks, including motors and gears. But unable to get parts is really bad. I'm surprised Kawasaki doesn't keep parts for a twenty year or so old car.

Maintenance guy? Station maintenance? Track maintenance? Plumbing?

Every self propelled electric railcar that I know of uses a gearbox with two gears. The pinion gear mounted to the traction motor shaft and the bull gear which is mounted on the axle. The motor turns the pinion gear which turns the bull gear which tours the axle which turns the wheels.

Don't believe everything you hear. Some people believe that subway cars have fratostatic yaw damping and the air brake system uses a float valve because of what they heard here.

i dont believe that for a minute. theres no way they would keep those cars around if they could GET or machine parts there in the shops the way NYCTA does.

Lead time for parts can be up to 180 days depending on the part and the manufacturer. The transit parts market is so competitive that I do not believe that there is a part that cannot be had. There was one guy who came to me on a regular basis to ask what I needed in the way of parts. Before the R-160s were delivered, he had drawings and he was making replacement parts. So from personal experience, I'm telling you that what you say you were told is simply not true.

Back when my uncle worked for Vapor Corporation, Boston ordered spare PCC parts from them. This was in the late 70s.

I don't see anything wrong with the R46s lasting until 2018. They are great cars. As long as they are maintained. Look at the R32 for example. Those trains are built to last. The 46s just need work on the A/C in the cabs for the summer since it's a bit uncomfortable and level the speakers so it's not loud in one car and normal in the other. As well as the window put a stop what you slide it in so it does t hit you when the train comes to a stop. I love them favorite cars I have worked with.

Should be as easy as tuning a banjo! Q: How long does it take to tune a banjo? A: Nobody knows!
