I have not looked at that website lately, but do know the photos you mean. I don't know which one they are off hand (and don't have time to go looking for the photos on that site right now), but there are a few station shells that were built for the IND Second System that were never completed.Because of WWII, the IND Second System's grand plans were scrapped. However, when much of the current IND was built, they were anticipating the IND Second System lines to be built, so the partially built provisions for the future planned lines. There is a station shell at the IND Utica Ave station on the Fulton line. It was for the planned, but never built Utica Ave station. Assumingly, the station would have been called "Fulton St". it's as long as the current Utica Ave is wide. That's one location. Another station shell that exists is for the IND South 4th Street station, which is at the G's Broadway station. The South 4th Street subway was to be a 6 track station like Hoyt-Schermerhorn. It too is built the width of a 6 track station, although only as long as the Broadway station is wide. There are a few more here and there (I think one at East Bway on the F, and a few other places) have provisons built too. Again, I haven't looked at the photos, but I believe I remember them being the Utica-Fulton station shell off hand. |

The Roosevelt station provision was actually completed with tiles and all. It was the most complete station shell proision for the IND second system built. However, I don't believe those are the photos he means on the site. I don't have time to look for the "IND Second System" photos on that site right now, but last I checked, they were for an incomplete station shell, I believe the one at Utica, but perhaps Southh 4th St. I don't remember seeing photos of the Roosevelt station provision on that site, but perhaps they added some there. If he can provide a direct link to the photos he means, it may be easier to determine. The abandoned mezzanine with the old IND token booth he linked to is I believe on the G line at one of those stations, Van Alst I believe. |

One time when I worked at Van Alst, I looked at a map of the station showing all the rooms and areas on the station. There was a booth at the other end. N-402. There was also a lower mezzazine.Maybe Ian's pics were of Van Alst. Maybe it's Broadway. But I can't see someone tiling the walls of the mezzazine and passageways and leaving the platform area in bare concrete. I don't think there was enough room at Fulton/Utica to build anything past a platform. Much less a mezzazine. |

There was supposed to be an entire station at Utica Fulton for the unbuilt Utica Subway. The mezzanine photos that are tiled are not that of a provision, that is seperate from the "Second System Photos". The mezzanine is of a once used mezzanine that is now abandoned. The station shell photos (completely different set of photos) are that of a unused station shell for the IND Second System, probably South 4th St at the Broadway Station on the G. All this confusion is because Ian posted a link to the mezzanine phtoos, and then also mentioned the seperate "IND Second System" photos in the same post, but did not link to them. People thought the mezzanine photos are the IND Second System photos on the site, and that is not the case. |

The station platform at Fulton/Utica on the IND Second System line is said to be as wide as Fulton Street. A few years ago one could look up on the platform from a door on the lower mezzazine. The one time I looked, I saw just a platform with nothing more than just concrete pillars and walls and ceilings. No signs ot plaques or anything else. I also saw a wall on the left. It was just a provision that was never expanded. We do not know where the pics on Ian's website are. I know it's not Ian's site. But I don't know how else to put it. The text doesn't say where they were taken. Definately it wasn'r taken on the "Centre Street Line". Selkirk says the pic of the booth has IRT on it. But we don't know where it is. |

Just for clarification, the booth LOOKS IRT, but my specific "looks IRT" has to do with the painted lead pipe center railings on the stairs - IND didn't do that. Now the machine that I use here has an old 256 color card in it because it's just plain faster for the business I do on this machine than a fancy "gaming graphics" card, so colors tend to be distorted on photographs - that's not what this machine is for. As a result, I missed noticing the "green" in the tilework. That's probably the more significant clue - and that'd suggest crosstown GG line ... mystery STILL not solved. Moo. :) |

That has nothing to do with the link he posted of the abandoned mezzanine, or the IND Scond System photos. But yes, you are right. The station shell at Utica/Fulton is the width of a typical IND express station, however, it is only as long as Fulton St is wide (which I already mentioned).
