Yes. I recall they used diesels to provide limited service the day after the 12/26/10 blizzard.

Yes they can. I rode a diesel train from Penn to Auburndale in January 2011 when the Railroad experienced major service delays due to one of the many blizzards that hit New York that winter.

When the railroads order railcars and equipment, they typically would order equiment that can be used anywhere at anytime on their system. Though AFAIK, the only place they cannot be run is on the Atlantic Branch between Jamaica and Flatbush Avenue, although the viaduct on Atlantic Avenue in Brooklyn has been rebuilt to a more stronger standard, I do believe they still cannot run on that portion.

Pulled out my 2004 ETT and took a look...C3's are prohibited from:

NYP track 18
Atlantic west of DUNTON
Bushwick Branch
Long Beach station
Hempstead station
Belmont station
West Side Yard 27 & 28
Port Washington Yard 5
Port Washington station 4 & 5
LIC tracks 0 & 1 (DE only, no DM)
Babylon Yard 11-17

All diesels on the Port Wash must stop and proceed (restricted speed) over Alley Creek Bridge.

I seem to recall there an issue with the weight of the DEs and DMs when originally designed that would have caused then to be prohibited from crossing that viaduct at all?

I heard from a track foreman I know at the LIRR that the DE/DM engines are a huge stress on the track structure as well as the UG (undergrade) bridges which is why MANY LIRR structures have had to be rehabbed when they first came online, especially on the Main Line.

Thanks for the info. They do not seem to be terribly restricted. Having been qualified in Penn myself, I can see why they would be restricted from Track 18, clearances and curvature of the east end leading into "C" Interlocking, am I right?? It should be noted it was NOT discussed when we were doing our Penn tour for my qualififcation, but it was noted that the doors are to be opened on only one side at Track 18 (north side, "Platform 10"), the only track in Penn which has platform on BOTH sides.

You're thinking of the viaduct between Manhasset and Great Neck. Alley Creek is by Douglaston station, and was replaced since 2004 so I'm pretty sure that rule is moot now.

For those unfamiliar with RDC's, that hump on the roof was the A/C unit along with the diesel exhaust. And when maintained, you'd get ice on the windows in summer. :)

My guess you rode them towards the end, when they were in shit condition. The ones used in the Metro North era were third hand models which probably suffered from significant deferred maintenance in the Conrail era.

I talked to someone who rode them on the Port Jervis line in 1988 and said the A/C worked, but the interior smelled of gasoline (he probably didn't realize it was diesel).

Yep ... the condenser coils are up there in the hump too, which is the reason for the fans up there as well. Fans also help to boost the exhaust as well up the stack. They were frostier than ACMU's at Croton at sunrise and the 42's when they were brand new. :)

If the rear door wasn't closed on those, the suction to the rear as they moved would pull the exhaust right back into the cars. That's the reason why I loved to refer to them as "the bus."

But they were great to operate when I'd get the chance. Had a friend who was an engineer who'd let me have some handle time here and there. :)

The hump on RDC had the Condensor coil for HVAC, the radiators for no 1 and 2 engine, the exhaust stacks, mufflers were next to one seater in middle of car. and te bell, mounted between the two stacks.
