Supposedly they were testing a new dining car with a high roof, new facilities, extra set of high windows, etc. Essentially, it looks like a bilevel car on the outside, but they instead used the extra space to make it airy, and the extra windows to let in more light. |

Railfan Chicago |
|
Posted by Nilet on Wed Aug 8 14:21:52 2012, in response to Here We Go, posted by Nilet on Mon Aug 6 16:35:45 2012. I'm not feeling particularly inspired. Anyone have any suggestions for activities (railfan or otherwise) in Chicago? I'm considering checking out the railfan windows the South Shore has kindly installed, but I'm not sure how many there are or the odds of getting one.I've already extensively ridden the brown and purple lines, plus the red line to Howard, the blue to O'Hare and the Skokie. I'd be a little more inclined to try railfanning Metra, so if anyone knows which lines are most fun and/or most likely to offer accessible railfan windows, I'd appreciate it! :) |

Visit the BNSF HO layout. Get there either by Metra Electric to 55-56-57th St or Express bus #10 IIRC along State St which will parallel ME most of the way.You could ride ME to Homewood wher on the East side of the CN(former IC) there is an official viewing gazebo w/ a radio feed. Watch the parade of ME southbounds, CN freights,Amtrak. Choice 3 head west on the BN to say La Grange and watch that parade. |

|
Posted by Alan Follett on Wed Aug 8 17:02:05 2012, in response to Railfan Chicago, posted by Nilet on Wed Aug 8 14:21:52 2012. There are no real railfan windows on Metra's push-pull equipment, though all the cab cars have a window in the end door from which a standing passenger can geet a good view forward on any inbound train. I've known conductors to object on safety grounds to passengers standing at the door, though.Probably the best railfan ride on Metra is BNSF to Aurora; you'll pass plenty of freight and passenger action along the three-track main. Another interesting choice might be a circle trip to Joliet, going one way on one of the handful of Amtrak or Metra Heritage Corridor trains (via the old Alton/GM&O line) and the other way on the Rock Island District. Or, for further variety, get off the RID at Blue Island and switch to the Metra Electric's single-track Blue Island Branch; the stations are adjacent. Or, if you're into traction, take the UP North Line to Kenosha, Wisconsin, and ride Kenosha Transit's two-mile trolley loop, which stops right in front of the Metra station. Don't be surprised if you're the only passenger. Alan Follett Hercules, CA |

When I last saw it, it arrived with the Boston section at RENS and when they combined the trains, it got sent back to Boston rather than going west. Dunno if that's normal, but that's what they did last time I saw it. |

Although When I went to Chicago for the first time as an adult in 1989, I didn't do the South Shore, I would think if you have the time and the money for an interurban fare, the South Shore is definitely high priority. |
