There are no real railfan windows on Metra's push-pull equipment, though all the cab cars have a window in the end door from which a standing passenger can geet a good view forward on any inbound train. I've known conductors to object on safety grounds to passengers standing at the door, though.Probably the best railfan ride on Metra is BNSF to Aurora; you'll pass plenty of freight and passenger action along the three-track main. Another interesting choice might be a circle trip to Joliet, going one way on one of the handful of Amtrak or Metra Heritage Corridor trains (via the old Alton/GM&O line) and the other way on the Rock Island District. Or, for further variety, get off the RID at Blue Island and switch to the Metra Electric's single-track Blue Island Branch; the stations are adjacent. Or, if you're into traction, take the UP North Line to Kenosha, Wisconsin, and ride Kenosha Transit's two-mile trolley loop, which stops right in front of the Metra station. Don't be surprised if you're the only passenger. Alan Follett Hercules, CA |
