IRT-PRR Sunnyside?

For those of you who have the Triumph V PRR book I just happened to notice a little item on page 300. The signal diagram there for the mainline through the yard shows a little box marked IRT on a spur off Line 4 just before the north tube, complete with a signal for returning to the PRR. This is now the Amtrak MOW track that frequently shows in pictures of the 7 line riser taken from 49th/Hunters Point Ave. Wonder if it was just some sort of construction material siding, perhaps for the 1927 extension to Times Square?

Bill

Where the MOW track is just as you pop out of the irt was an irt inspection shed on lirr property.half way up the ramp was a switchback into lirr trackage.the conn.was both e/b & w/b.there is evidence[according to the ERA] that the steinway cars were delivered thru the PRR tubes on their own wheels.sorry,no photos exsist of this conn.

Would that be the connection August Belmont might have used to take his private rail car out to Long Island?

Thanks for the info, TR. The Triumph book is only about the PRR so it doesn’t reach far enough to mention Flatbush.

Why do I remember seeing a very early picture of the (7) line popping out from Hunters Point Avenue, showing this connection still in place? Or at least remnants of it. Dammit, where did I see it....

Item 1:

The IRT inspection shed shows up in a 1930 home movie taken out the front window of an L5.

It was tucked under the Montauk cut-off right next to Line 4 and just before PRR "Portal A."

Item 2:

The "IRT Connection" at Flatbush Ave.

Was built and did physically exist at least in my memory (back to 1979) but was long since unused. It was removed some time in the 1980's if I recall correctly.

I discovered some PRR correspondence regarding partial ommission of the IRT Connection when the Contract II IRT station was built in 1907-08, though it indeed had originally been designed into the LIRR terminal.

Simply put, PRR couldn't justify it with Penn Station on the way and its associated expense. They needed the LIRR to defray capital construction costs through its future rental payments. The partial connection that was installed symbolized the cooperation engendered between two gentlemen: August Belmont II of the IRT and Ralph Peters of the LIRR.

There was no concrete evidence of it ever being used absent a Bob Emery notation about private charters for August Belmont until 1916. (And we NEVER question Bob Emery!!...)

A removable platform covered its continuation on to LIRR Track 6 when it was active (that became Track 2 after July 1, 1978). According to another set of notes a section of concrete platform was permanently placed over the IRT connection as part of changes made at Flatbush Ave. to accommodate the BRT Brighton Tunnel at its 1920 opening.

Interesting question is how the "Mineola" was moved on and off the LIRR? A set of MP-41's could have hauled it west to Manhattan. Perhaps a set of Hi-V's took it east...Will we ever know?

great catch on the film of the inspection shed.it probably was abandoned when corona yard was opened in 1927.i,m guessing it was used for storage by the lirr/prr untill it was no longer needed.item 2:the tunnel connection is still there,it was built over several times over the years.there is a written account by E.J.Quinby,founder of the ERA of going to belmont racetrack via the flatbush conn.with mr.belmont & company.the mineola was a powered car,it didn`t need to be hauled by Hi-v`s or anything else.later on in years belmont placed a composite car behind it in case of a rear end collision.remember, belmont sat on the board of directors of the lirr[iirc,he was a vice president]I never heard of the movable platform or the concrete platform.there is no evidense of it thru my own personal research.I.E:.well over 10 years ago I belly crawled under the irt conn. to the lirr bumper block.I don`t see why the "block" would have stopped operations.can you publish these notes? In the orignal opening of the irt to flatbush station booklet which I have seen it states that on june 25th of the same year a"special train of irt cars"was to make a run from city hall to Jamaica station"via the conn.on lirr tracks.in the orignal 1904 lirr tower at flat bush terminal it showed both the e/b & w/b track conn.into the irt. on the model boardI,m curious to know why art huneke never mentioned this or took a photo of it.thanks for a good post.my times up[library p.c.]talk soon.
