Item 1:

The IRT inspection shed shows up in a 1930 home movie taken out the front window of an L5.

It was tucked under the Montauk cut-off right next to Line 4 and just before PRR "Portal A."

Item 2:

The "IRT Connection" at Flatbush Ave.

Was built and did physically exist at least in my memory (back to 1979) but was long since unused. It was removed some time in the 1980's if I recall correctly.

I discovered some PRR correspondence regarding partial ommission of the IRT Connection when the Contract II IRT station was built in 1907-08, though it indeed had originally been designed into the LIRR terminal.

Simply put, PRR couldn't justify it with Penn Station on the way and its associated expense. They needed the LIRR to defray capital construction costs through its future rental payments. The partial connection that was installed symbolized the cooperation engendered between two gentlemen: August Belmont II of the IRT and Ralph Peters of the LIRR.

There was no concrete evidence of it ever being used absent a Bob Emery notation about private charters for August Belmont until 1916. (And we NEVER question Bob Emery!!...)

A removable platform covered its continuation on to LIRR Track 6 when it was active (that became Track 2 after July 1, 1978). According to another set of notes a section of concrete platform was permanently placed over the IRT connection as part of changes made at Flatbush Ave. to accommodate the BRT Brighton Tunnel at its 1920 opening.

Interesting question is how the "Mineola" was moved on and off the LIRR? A set of MP-41's could have hauled it west to Manhattan. Perhaps a set of Hi-V's took it east...Will we ever know?
