Ok guys i was able to get some aerial maps from 1951 and compare them from 2010 satellite map (Credit to gis.nyc.gov/doitt/nycitymap/)

1951:
Photobucket
2010:
Photobucket

As you can see , in the 1951 aerial view the connection to the El at Liberty ave hasn't been built and it looks like there is some major construction going on directly at 75-76 Street and Pitkin. My take on it is that the tunnel extends beyond the Cinder block wall but its just that , a tunnel leading down to 76 Street with or without tracks and then ends. The area for the Station was probably excavated underground but nothing was built.

Construction ended in 1942 and was never re-started. The decision to connect to the BMT only was made before 1951, so none of these fuzzy pics show any construction, just empty lots which, by 1960 will be full of houses.

There is no 76th station. There is probably nothing beyond the cinder block wall down there.

All the postwar construction here was restricted to the ramp down from 80th St and the Grant Ave station.

How do we know the city didn't just board it up for a few years in the 40's then in 51 decide to partially fill it in from the top? after all they didn't put that cinder block wall in till later also, you can tell that one wall isn't more than 30-40 years old otherwise it would have alot more Graffiti than just "PHONOH". I was in there in the early 90's and the wall was there so we know in 93 it was up. I noticed the signals and thought it was kinda suspicious but I was there for another reason and dismissed it unfortunately. There's a few things that we know don't add up like the fact there were bulkheads on tracks that are in use as the Pitkin yard leads from the ramp today, why would they wall those up if they were building the ramp? Were they not sure it was going in? That brings a whole new light on the B of T starting stuff they didn't know if they would finish. And the probability of the partial tunnel being built. The design of the layup tracks under Grant ave station aren't normal either with 1 track coming to a wall much sooner than the others.

The only place there is a ciderblock wall is at the ends of A7 and A8 yard leads ad the wall was not there when I went in there in 1962. At that time there was no wall of any kind but there were mounds of black earth from the floor to the ceiling of the tunnel as if the rest of the tunnel(s) had been filled in at some point. When I went there next in 1983, the cinderblock walls had been erected. At the end of the "mainline" Pitkin Av subway S/O Euclid, there is a concrete wall which I have heard was only put there circa 1956 when the Grant Av station was being constructed and which replaced an earlier wooden wall which had been there since sometime around 1951 when it was decided not to continue further construction down Pitkin Av. What is interesting about that concrete wall is that it zigs slightly at track A1 making A1 track about 50 ft or so shorter than the other 3 tracks. Why that wall was built that way I don't know but there is some sort of a track map in one of the threads on tis subject that shows the oddly configured wall.

If you are talking about the Pitkin Av subway, from personal observation it appears that the current "end of the tunnel" is about midway between Grant Av and Eldert Lane.

That section of the IND was built long before the MTA and probably the NYCTA was even thought of. That was strictly a City of NY operation and possibly not even specifically built by the B of T although it was for eventual B of T use.
