That photo has been doctored. BTC never used a paint scheme like that. PCCs were Green & Cream until 1945 when NCL got control of BTC the paint scheme was Yellow & Grey. Save your $$$. |

Save your $$$.NCL intially painted them yellow and green with gray roofs. The yellow and gray re-repaints took place between 1949 and 1951. Hard to tell exactly what the colors are in a B&W photo, but 7138 probably looked like this in 1949:

It was used on 15 or 20 cars when the management decided the green was out, thus the scheme was yellow and grey to the end in November 3, 1963. |

Not as tough as a BMT standard, but still pretty crashworthy. Take Chicago's Green Hornet 7205. On July 17, 1949, it split a switch at State and Root, derailed and wrapped itself around a utility pole. There were only minor injuries and no fatalities. The car was eventaully rebuilt with parts from 7078, which was incinerated the following year when it hit a gasoline truck at 63rd and State. |

PCC's are pretty big and weigh in at 19 tons each. Imagine if they were 70 foot steel interurbans that weigh in at 40 tons each!Autos, yeah, PCC's will overwhelm them easily, especially considering how cars were were constructed back then. When PCC's clobber immovable objects or each other they still do ok, but won't meet the current transit buffer standards. Take a look at pics of the two Shaker PCC's that head on'd many years ago (there's slides on ebay of the stripped bodies on ebay right now) or when the Muni LRV rear ended the ex-Philly PCC car in SF. I have the newspaper clippings from the Shaker crash still, they were very lucky no one was killed. |
