Do the pantographs automatically lower and raise as the trains enter and leave the tunnel? Even at full speed?2. Is "Los Angeles" the most descriptive front sign they could come up with? Imagine if our A, B, C, E, J, L, Z, 1, 3, 6, and 7 trains all said simply "New York" because they terminate in Manhattan (not to mention that the other boroughs are also part of New York). |

They're the new crash energy management cars from Rotem which Metrolink ordered because cannot avoid playing bumper-trains and the "compliant", "safe" Bombardier Bilevels turned out to be anything but. Apparently they're being called the "Guardian Fleet" which I guess sounds a lot better than the Coffin Car or Beercan Bilevels for the old Bombardiers. Metrolink began taking deliveries back in 2010, and according to Wikipedia there are 24 cab cars on property, with 62 to go, and a similar number of interior cars. It sounds like most of the time for now they'll be used to supplement the Bombardier cars, with a pair of Rotems sandwiching a set of Bombardier cars in the middle of the trainset. This puts a CEM-equipped Rotem car on the point and another one between the locomotive and the rest of the train, but in the long term Metrolink wants to replace the Bombardier cars with the CEM equipped Rotem cars or a similar design. The increase in fleet size has also allowed Metrolink to copy Caltrain's bicycle cars by removing seats from the lower level of some Bombardier cars.Rotem's page on the 'Guardian Fleet'. Also, in before 'Dan Lawrence is wrong again'. |

Do the pantographs automatically lower and raise as the trains enter and leave the tunnel? Even at full speed?Yes, the pantographs are pushed down by the wire to the point where they ride on the bottom of the wire in the reduced clearances of the subway portion of the Blue/Expo Line. The LRVs run on catenary throughout their trip. 2. Is "Los Angeles" the most descriptive front sign they could come up with? What would you suggest as an alternative which would be any more descriptive? Unlike NYC, Los Angeles' urban subcenters do not identify themselves as being a part of Los Angeles even if they lie within the city or county boundaries. As such Los Angeles suffices to be sufficiently descriptive and a lot easier to understand than '7th and Flower - Metro Center'. |

When the regional light rail connector opens in 7 or 8 years the destination signs will change anyway to wherever the lines will end in the San Gabriel Valley and East LA. |

Yeah, in a few years LA will have a good system. Well maybe not good for a city the size of LA, but still decent. |

If there's any horrific crash again, why do I see the beer can sandwiched between two guardians being crushed like an empty natty at a frat party? |

Because most of LA is such an area. It is who we thought it was - poor/ghetto. Not as unsafe anymore though. Crime is still dropping. You wouldn't like it though. |

I don't know about "quick". The blue line has been running for 20+ years and while the ends in downtown LA and Long Beach have improved (especially LA), there has been no evidence of any gentrification in the middle. Not a single TOD has been built for the blue line. What will happen quickly is development along the Expo line. There are several TOD's proposed and approved for Phase 2 which should start construction next year and be open even before the rail line opens. |
