They're the new crash energy management cars from Rotem which Metrolink ordered because cannot avoid playing bumper-trains and the "compliant", "safe" Bombardier Bilevels turned out to be anything but. Apparently they're being called the "Guardian Fleet" which I guess sounds a lot better than the Coffin Car or Beercan Bilevels for the old Bombardiers. Metrolink began taking deliveries back in 2010, and according to Wikipedia there are 24 cab cars on property, with 62 to go, and a similar number of interior cars. It sounds like most of the time for now they'll be used to supplement the Bombardier cars, with a pair of Rotems sandwiching a set of Bombardier cars in the middle of the trainset. This puts a CEM-equipped Rotem car on the point and another one between the locomotive and the rest of the train, but in the long term Metrolink wants to replace the Bombardier cars with the CEM equipped Rotem cars or a similar design. The increase in fleet size has also allowed Metrolink to copy Caltrain's bicycle cars by removing seats from the lower level of some Bombardier cars.Rotem's page on the 'Guardian Fleet'. Also, in before 'Dan Lawrence is wrong again'. |
