Amtrak questions

For those knowledgeable about Amtrak:

1. What's the latest on restoring any kind of service on the Sunset Limited east of New Orleans? Most of the results I googled were 2 years old (and not very promising).

2. Why is the Pensylvanian's connecting service to Chicago so inconvenient? That service could probably be faster than the Lake Shore limited between NYP and Chicago, but a three or four hour gap betwen it's arrival in Pittsburgh and the connecting Capitol Limited make it pretty useless.

3. Which NYP services use the P32DMs? Is it only the Lake Shore Limited and Empire service trains?

1. Doubtful anything will happen. There was a PRIIA study though, which is on the Amtrak website.

2. Each service is largely intended to serve their own markets. That said, in about a year, the services will be combined. two coaches, a lounge, and a sleeper will run through from NYP-CHI via the two trains. It will probably wait for a while in PGH, but it will be a lot more convenient.

3. P32ACDMs are used on every train using the Empire connection. That means Empire Corridor trains, The Lake Shore, The Maple Leaf, The Adirondak, and The Ethan Allen. Often but not always, they will be switched off the train at Albany, and replaced with a normal P40/P42

Re, Number 2, the Pennsylvanian will be discontinued and a new Capitol Limited (similar to the current Lake Shore limited setup) will operate to NYP?

Not exactly- The Pennsylvanian will be modified- An additional sleeper and an extra corridor coach will be added, with the sleeper, lounge, and two LD coaches cut off at pittsburgh, and added to the Capitol consist. I expect this train to have three numbers, NYP-CHI, NYP-PGH and WAS-CHI, much like other routes which do this sort of operation. They already modified the schedule to make this possible, and it is said to be the first place the new Viewliner sleepers will go.

The P32's are on any train that goes south of Alb/Rens: No desiel fumes allowed in Penn Station. The inter city trains get the engine change at Alb, but the Ethan Allen express does not. Not sure about the Adirondack. .The P32 Ethan goes all the way to VT.
The story about east of NO on the Sunset LTD. is the same as 4 years ago: The Ex-L&N stations between Jax and NO belong to CSX. Of course they won't fork over the dough to restore them in MS and AL. The states won;t pay and of course AMTK says" we don't own the bldg's so it's not my yob!". SO limbo continues.

Damn near all the trains are longer now. Nearly 100 cars returned to service, and nearly 300 new cars on order, replacing about 100 cars. Amtrak will be able to carry more people than ever before. (and has been doing so regularly.)

The Sunset pretty much is ghost train around here. Many do want it back, but unless everyone along the route somehow gets the money to pay for the stations to be fixed up (no new equipment needed since the train set needed to run to east is sitting in NOL) that train will continue to be a ghost train. I can tell you Crestview is not interested with bringing it back according to the second article.

Ugh fuck, that will probably kill the railfan window on half of the Cap route :-( The PRR route needs a direct train to Chicago, not bullshit through cars. What does that save people...moving their luggage?

If NS hadn't pulled out CP-WEST PITT it would have been pretty simple to attach the cars to the front in both directions because they'd have a siding to pull the cars out of westbound. In fact, I don't know how they can possibly make that move because there are no siding tracks in that station complex that face toward Chicago.

If Amtrak keeps the Pennsylvanian crew around the westbound Cap can pull into the station and then the east facing Pennsylvanian trainsrt can pull through CP-PITT then onto the back of the platformed Cap. Westbound the cars would be cut off and then eastbound facing Pennsylvanian trainset would pull out of its station track then back up to hook onto them. Either way they can't do this with one crew.

Amtrak needs to either run real train to Chicago

Define "real train". Should we upgrade the Keystone Corridor to overhead wires and Class 8 track, rebuild the former PRR west of there to the same standard, and run Acelas into Chicago's Randolph Street Station after rebuilding the power cars to run on 1.5kV DC in addition to AC electrification? Think we could get them up to an eight-hour running speed if we skipped all stations between Harrisburg and Chicago . . . ? (We're definitely skipping Paoli, I hope you realize.)

If I'm not mistaken, I think it has been reported that sometimes a train will approach the Empire Connection with a P42 and then a Swedish Meatball (or maybe a spare P32) will attach on just before Penn Station and pull the train into the station.

Also, sometimes you get a mix of P32 and P42:

Yes. They're the first superliner on nearly every long distance train. They have been used mid train in the past, usually back when a line was being converted to superliner, and they only had enough superliners to convert either the coaches or sleepers.

Indeed both sections are the LSL as was the case in NYC times and as is the case w/ the Empire Builder west of Spokane.
On the issue of train lengths, I would point out the capacities of the cars are greater than in the "classical" era. Because I had access to 1961 consists of the California Zephyr arriving Oakland, I was able to compare seats/beds with the current Amtrak version. In fact the current Amtrak train has a few more beds and a few less seats than in 1961. Conversely it would take half a dozen Amtrak LSLs to equal what NYC was running in 61. The same is true of Florida service--Amtrak runs a minor shadow of what ACL and SAL ran ,not to mention that Cut Slash and eXecute has shredded the former mainlines seriously constraining capacity.

Since no one else said the name yet, it's the "transition sleeper" or "transition dorm" (since it has often been used as the crew dorm). I would imagine they would try and structure the train to minimize traffic through it since it is a sleeper, so I am curious to see how they will accomplish slapping a Pennsylvanian onto it...

And from here the floor plan of the Transdorm:

It'd be nice if they'd tag the Transdorm on in addition to the 2-3 Superliner sleepers the Cap Ltd normally runs with and the new Viewliner or two, and then sell that space. Does suck if you want a Superliner Bedroom, but that's a hell of a lot of Roomettes that'd be available.
