New York's Metropolitan Transportation Authority Board of Directors is expected Wednesday to award a contract to Bombardier Transportation for 300 R179 subway cars.

An MTA staff report recommended acceptance of Bombardier's order, at a cost of just under $600 million, over a competing bid from ALSKAW LLC, a consortium comprised of Alstom and Kawasaki.

"It is recommended that the Board approve th awared of a competitively negotiated contract to Bombardier in the amount of $599,473, 746 to design, furnish and deliver 300 R179 suway cars and related non-car items such as spare parts, special tools, diagnostic test equipment, technical documentation, and training for the 'B' Divison fleet," the report says.

MTA's original plan called for an initial order of 290 cars, with an option for 50 more. Funding for the purchase comes largely from the Federal Transit Administration.

After all the bad experiences they have had in the past with BOMBardier they still want to award them a contract.

Good, keep the R-32s around as long as possible. To me, they are always to be known as the B Division's best!! I just hope the TA puts better maintenance into them!!

The Q types lasted 64 years.

54 for the 1904 built Hi-V Gibbs subway cars. The Q Types are Elevated cars. They are however the oldest rolling stock ever run.

Anywhere in the world, cars (especially MUs) that lasted in service more than fifty years in most cases did so out of necessity, not by choice.

I'm not sure if the Gibbs cars lasted as long as the rest of the H-Vs in passenger service. By 1959, I think all the Hi-Vs had been withdrawn from passenger service although I do remember seeing some Gibbs and other Hi-Vs in work train service as late as 1960 and possibly a bit later.

They do have an article on the Hi-Vs on nycsubway.org. It was either 53 or 54 years old. I think it was 54 years old for the Gibbs in 1958. The last Hi-Vs in service that I do know of were the Hedleys in 1959. The sad part about it is that there are no examples of Hi-Vs in the subway at all (Yeah I know about the Lo-Vs, but the Hi-Vs were the first steel passengers cars). Thankfully two surviving cars are in separate museums #3352 and 3662. Footage of the Hi-Vs in action is just as hard to come by then the pictures of the cars themselves. However I did find some any way. I'll post a link to it when I find it.

If there were any Hi-Vs in passenger service in 1959 it must have been very early 1959 since in February of that year, the massive West Side IRT Route changes went into effect making the Bway (#!) exclusively R-21 and 22. I recall riding both the Bway 137 St locals and Lenox locals in late 1958 and early 1959 and they were solid Lo-V by then. As I mentioned, there were Hi-Vs in work service after that but I never saw any Hi-Vs in passenger service after that.
