New York's Metropolitan Transportation Authority Board of Directors is expected Wednesday to award a contract to Bombardier Transportation for 300 R179 subway cars.

An MTA staff report recommended acceptance of Bombardier's order, at a cost of just under $600 million, over a competing bid from ALSKAW LLC, a consortium comprised of Alstom and Kawasaki.

"It is recommended that the Board approve th awared of a competitively negotiated contract to Bombardier in the amount of $599,473, 746 to design, furnish and deliver 300 R179 suway cars and related non-car items such as spare parts, special tools, diagnostic test equipment, technical documentation, and training for the 'B' Divison fleet," the report says.

MTA's original plan called for an initial order of 290 cars, with an option for 50 more. Funding for the purchase comes largely from the Federal Transit Administration.
