Thanks for the upload. The Tubes is one of my favorite systems. They should do a series like this for the DC Metro.

I only watched the first few minutes, but apparently, commuters in London are just as idiotic as some of the commuters in the NYC subway (dude pissing on platform, train being cancelled due to puke, pissy drunk passenger). The Tubes reminds me of a Saturday night Babylon train. I still think the Tubes is a better system than the NYC subway, but they have their own share of problems.

Very interesting program. Thanks for posting. At 33:13, somebody is driving a Hummer limo (or what looks like a Hummer limo, anyway). Why would somebody want to drive such a vehicle in the middle of London, even at night?

The dramatic coverage of GO's is interesting...notice they never connect the confused tourists and the shuttle buses together.

And the nighttime shutdowns...thank god we don't have that here!

The one loophole that was listed in the article is that many of their crimes are in their parking lots and many of the cities that they are being compared with don't have nearly as much parking to account for. Aside from that, I think that they really must have higher crime within their system. DC as a city has a pretty high crime rate (triple that of LA and NY) so it makes sense that would be reflected in their transit crime. But I'm not sure why it's so much higher than Philly and Atlanta which have similar crime rates.

Did you also see that Dallas DART, which isn't very heavily used, has had three homicides in the last 4 months!

I take back everything I said about the London Underground

I apologize to the NYC subway for all the years of unfair criticism. I finally had a chance to watch the full video. The people of London are just as ghetto (if not more) than the people of NYC. I thought of London as this pristine, royal European city, but nothing can be further than the truth. In the video, I've seen drunk and rowdy passengers, a guy pissing at the end of the platform, several people vomiting, and falling asleep and ending up at the last stop. But the worst incident was a stabbing (yes, stabbing) that occurred at the 35 minute mark. I didn't think things like that happened in London. And Chris and Luch, both the victim and perp were white.

I still want to visit London, but I can no longer honestly say that this is a better system than the NYC subway. On weekends, they shut down 25% of the system. And it seems like almost everyone in the UK has messed up teeth.

The thing is, events like the ones you saw on the video exist in every big city around the world. As WMATAGMOAGH you should visit the place and not just watch videos on youtube. I've been to London 3 times and it is a pristine and definitely royal city. It's one of my favorite places! The thing you've got to understand, though, is that with lots of people comes lots of voice and unpleasant events. It's just a shortcoming of living in a big city. I think your problem is that you idealize things to a great extent. What I mean is, that you tend to view the things you like and are passionate about in a way that you cannot accept their faults and shortcomings or you're blind to them.
We all have our passions which we should support and defend but we also need to be objective and take some constructive criticism. I never said you should accept something like "WMATA is terrible", as that's not an argument. You should just learn how to reason and accept something you ar passionate about with its shortcomings.
P.S. Visit London! It's the greatest city in Europe (in my opinion)

I'm not sure that woman was stabbed. They were speculating that she may have been, but based on the video I suspect that she may have been punctured by something on the tracks.

I've watched most of the older "The Tube" videos now and one thing that I notice is that in general the London police put up with a lot more than American police would. People get in their faces inches away and curse them out and they just take it.

I think that London may be worse than both NY and LA in terms of low class, rude people. Stay on the west end if you want more civilized behaviour.

The food is awful. Fat and sugar flows everywhere. They have Safeway supermarkets, which look like 1950's A&P's over here.
Most LU trains had no air conditioning, and the Circle line "C" cars had wooden floors , which you can't clean.

Plus the intent of these shows is to show interesting occurrences that happen in the tube. They piece together days and weeks of footage and of course will leave out the mostly mundane happenings so that people will watch. They intentionally go to places that are known for drunks and at the times that the drunks will be there. They could do that in any city. Even places like Tokyo.

I was there 2 years ago. Most of the tube trains are comparable to New York's in style and cleanliness. They still do not have AC, though. But the trains are punctual, and they have countdown clocks in every station.

I saw no Safeways. The food scene is much improved. They have a lot of "foodie" stuff, much more varied and wholesome. Plus many ethnic restaurants so you can avoid "British" food easily.

Well that is good regarding the food. I had to go to the Tower Hotel just to get a decent turkey dinner. There was clotted cream everywhere.
There were McDonalds and Pizza Huts everywhere, but the McDees beef had a funny odor. The hotels leave you coffee/tea condiments, but they leave the cream out with no refrigeration. I dumped it fearing food poisoning.
You have to ask for ice for soft drinks, and then you get ONE cube.

I was there in 2001. "C" stock has been since upgraded. So has "D" stock, but when I was there, it still had the wooden slat floor. Those are the cars with the single leaf doors. I found the system to be similar to NYCT - with "A" (tube) and "B" (subsurface) divisions. I found the video to be exceptional, with the exception of the despicable 1992 Tube Stock, which I find no use whatsoever for. And no mention of the Bakerloo save for the lead-in at Piccadilly Circus.

That's one of the reason the Underground drivers have a "superstition" about operating with the cab light illuminated. The theory is that if a person wishes to commit suicide and sees a train approaching with a darkened cab, then he/she will jump since it is perceived that the train is doing the actual killing. If, however the would be suicide sees a person in the cab, then he/she is less likely to want to do the deed since he/she would not want a live person to suffer the guilt of killing another. The drivers do claim that operating with the cab light on does reduce the chances of having a person jump in front of their trains.

They both have their pros and cons, of course. Countdown timers everywhere in London...NYC is still years aay from that Also they will make annoucements when something unusual is going on or some service is late like at High Street Kensington there was an annoucement one time that the circle line train is more than 8 minutes away so passengers are suggested to take this district line train to Earls Court and change there. You never get that in New York, you are left to fend fvor yourself (you know my pet peeve...a C train comes into Jay Street-Metro Tech and you're head for Broadway Junction...take it or wait for the A train which might be right behind or more than 10 minutes away but some here think it's no big deal that sort of thing which would be corrected, of course with countdown timers).

As noted no A/c in London at all whereas almost all NYC subways have A/C that does function (although because of the laws of physics, this makes the stations unbearbly hotter than they would be sans a/c on the trains). It was claimed for a long time London did not need A/C but I've been on some tube trains in the summer where the heat has been almost unbearable. But A/C is coming.

24/7 in NY...19 hours a day in London. Express service on many lines in NY. Little in London (well the Picadilly line on the way in from Heathrow with the district line serving as the local). A single fare with transfers to buses in NY....zoned system in London and no transfers from underground to bus but much more imaginative fare system what with the oyster card and its capping system now but ungodly high single fare prices (the woman on the video being charged 5 quid for a single ouch). Trains more clearly marked in New York, important when there are multiple destinations.

As I said, both saystems have their pros and cons.

Visit London! It's the greatest city in Europe (in my opinion)

FWIW, I've never been to London, but I've been Paris, Barcelona, and Berlin, and I'd lean toward Berlin... :-)
