Probly none. The question is how much from the fare box, and how much from the tax payer.

LION can see that city needs more tax support, and suburbanites want less tax on them. "Let the users pay".

$9.00 is NOT TOO MUCH MONEY to pay for a ticket. Say it is 20 miles each way. That would be $20.00 by private car at 50c/mile, not including tolls and parking.

It gets a hell of a lot easier when the commuters only have to coordinate their trip in to work. And of course there's always far more informal arrangements like Slugging which can enable commuters to beat this completely and utterly idiotic fare system.

That 50c/mi reflects the TCO of an automobile. None of ours are top quality cars, we usually buy low mileage used cars and run them until they are completely dead.

Price includes cost of car, insurance, maintenance, fuel, amortization, etc. does not include bridges or parking which out here have no costs.

Given the cost of your insurance, compared to ours, and the fact that you must pay tolls and parking your TCO should be considerably higher.

Actually we are now figuring usage at 55c/mi -- we use government figures to charge mileage on our cars. This amount is charged to the department that uses the vehicle. If someone wants to hire one of our priests for weekend coverage, we invoice his salary plus mileage as stated above. If I want to go on vacation, I must include $75.00 car fare to the airport as part of my vacation proposal.

You can swipe out as you exit. The WAMTA has it.

If you use swipe in - swipe out system, you can eliminate most of the conductors, and move some of personnel to station agents. Shanghai Metro has a similar system.

See, now THAT is a good idea, especially because it would bring fares and headways on the PW line more in line with the subway/local bus fare. More people from NE Queens (myself included) would switch to the railroad from the bus/7 train combo. Of course, that would require some thinking outside the box, and I think we all know how the MTA doesn't want to do that.

Far from the truth. Try actually riding the PW branch. I catch the 7:04AM from Great Neck to PW every morning and its packed with folks reverse commuting who from appearances I would guess are less than affluent. Same goes for many other schedules on the line. Adding this station would more serve the reverse commuters than anyone else, but to be honest, they're already riding from Flushing. I don't see much benefit to adding the station

Hell to the N-O. And the Atlantic Branch was never an MTA line. It's one of the original lines that helped form the LIRR. Getting rid of it is the same short sightedness that cost us the Rockaway Branch and the central, two lines badly needed by the communities they previously served. Years from now when GCT and NYP are maxed out and the LIRR somehow still has a need for more service (and the capacity for it east of Jamaica), the Brooklyn line will be the answer...unless you really want Bushwick running again

LIRR gave up running its trains on the Rockaway Line 50 years ago. Why would they want it back now? With the A train already on the Rockaway Line south of Liberty Ave, it makes more sense to give the rest of the line over to NYCT to avoid running into FRA-compliance and compatibility issues. Atlantic is a different story since the LIRR is still actively running full train service on it. But it really feels like the Railroad is bent on cutting service to Brooklyn in favor of Manhattan.

Elmhurst (especially the "alphabet city" [Aske, Benham, Case, Denman, etc.] between Elmhurst and Lamont/43rd Avenues) has become a little more affluent with the conversions of the historic apartment buildings into co-ops. Thanks to the Vantage group/Cooper Square realty working to "revitalize" the neighborhood. White collar workers in their late-20s to early-40s looking to get more bang for their buck are moving to Elmhurst. I'm pretty sure if the Elmhurst station were to reopen, we'd see a little less white collars waiting for the 7 at 90th Street or the M/R at Elmhurst Avenue.

My info was old. Nikon is now in Melville and TDK in Uniondale. But I believe the residential community is still in the PW area. It's a community of temporary residents who are here for business and only live there for 3-5 years. Permanent resident Japanese who work at those companies mostly live elsewhere in Nassau or Queens.

The original Japanese residential community for Nassau based companies was Flushing, Queens. But as the Koreans took over Flushing in the eighties, they moved closer to their workplaces. By the mid-nineties, Japanese food stores, hair salons, rental video stores started popping up in Port Washington. You gotta please the wives who usually do not have work permits when they come to the US.
