Neither... yellow doors are H5s, which will begin retiring this year but will probably last into next year. Red doors are the T1s, which still have a lot of life left in them and will be with us for many years to come.Orange doors are H6's, which are also going soon. The H4s have mucus green doors (for lack of a better analogy lol). TRs have unpainted steel doors. |

Asbestos brake shoes were phased out many, many years ago. It'd be nice if the Halton County could take a couple of them, but they have no room. |

Other than Halton County, which isn't run by the TTC, there isn't any. There was talk a couple of years ago about starting one, but then the Mayor changed, and he stacked the commission with a bunch of penny pinchers so there's no way it'll happen now. |

Some equipment, at least in New York, has asbestos insulation within the car body (which is why we dumped them in the ocean, as asbestos is only harmful when airborne), I think that is what he was refering to. |

Many electrically powered rail cars built before the government broke the asbestos companies' coverup of the hazardous nature of asbestos used the substance for insulation. |

Swap in larger sills at the doorways and it would be 10'6" wide. The original 56' long G series cars were that wide. They're about 37 yrs old. TTC seems to retire their stock when they reach 30-35 yrs old. Some go to the scrap yard, but the H-5 and H-6 are slated to go overseas (Lagos Metro).http://www.subways.net/nigeria/lagos.htm I could imagine these running short turn service (w/ 750V electrical equipment) on the LIRR between the Queens County Line (or at least Jamaica Station and Willet Pt-Mets) and Atlantic Ave, NY Penn Station, (and Grand Central Terminal ESA level when done). It would resemble RER, S-Bahn, or Japanese commuter rail service. |

I'm posting the following for Mark Brader. The H-4's were the last Toronto subway cars with really comfortable seats, but also the last ones that weren't air-conditioned. I won't miss them in the summer, but I will the rest of the year. The inside door color is better described as cream. Here are all the colors that have been used: G-1,G-2,G-3,G-4 - green M-1 - unpainted (silver) H-1 - light grayish brown H-2,H-4 - cream H-5 - yellow H-6 - orange T-1 - dark red Rocket - unpainted (silver) I just did some searching for H-2 or H-4 cars in Google Images; there were lots of false hits (pictures of other classes of car) and a bunch of poor quality images, but here's a good one where the colors are clearly visible. http://torontoist.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/01/20120127-TTC-D4-Final-Run8-Corbin_Smith.jpg The H-2 and H-4 cars were virtually identical, except that the H-2's had some triple seats facing forwards and backwards, like the old G-cars. This meant that an H-2 had 6 more seats but less standing room. One difference visible from the outside was that the H-4's introduced a single mounting bracket for the two indicator lights on each side, marking the guard's car and a car with one or more doors open. The H-2's and all earlier cars had these lights mounted separately; the H-5's and all later cars extended the bracket to add a third light for the passenger-alarm indicator. Note that some seatbacks in the photo are orange and some are two-tone. I'm not 100% certain on this, but I believe the two-tone is the original design for both H-2 and H-4 and the solid orange ones were installed as cheaper replacements in later years. Here are some of the inferior photos that I found (bad color or too small or don't show enough of the car). All of these actually show H-4's, even though the last one has "H2" in the URL: http://www.blogto.com/upload/2012/01/2012127-h4-int-ed.jpg http://www.blogto.com/upload/2012/01/2012127-h4-seats-ed.jpg http://media.thestar.topscms.com/images/b4/94/31850cfa48eeb584c2fa2a82fe53.jpg http://media.citytv.topscms.com/images/0f/20/93843925409abb2c2af71a12c424.jpg http://nationalpostnews.files.wordpress.com/2012/01/subway1.jpg?w=620 http://farm6.static.flickr.com/5135/5497795796_12d2e13d40.jpg http://farm6.staticflickr.com/5212/5497795056_b02c750c25_z.jpg http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/c/c9/Toronto_Subway_Train_Type_H2_Interior.jpg Mark Brader, Toronto |

Yeh, BUT:1) M-3 is better able to handle snow than an M-1 with different air intake system and heated doors. (still can't beat an MP72, an 1100, or evena BMT Standard in the snow). 2) 15-17 years newer 3) Replacements will soon be funded. They will live no more years the the M-1. |
