I talked to Peter once about that, and apparently they did the equivalent of a USB stick memory on the CPU boards which would allow them to change them out ... the code for WinCE was signed integer, therefore the 2GB limit (it's slightly under 2) applied. Those aren't hard disks, those would never survive the environment on a train ... |

Years ago, they did radio time and temperature announcements using that method and it ended up sounding more like National Semiconductor's "speak and spell" ... the whole length announcements sound more natural even if WAV files are piggy large ...Pity they didn't go with something like BSD and .au files instead ... |

The current IRT countdown clocks utilize Bernie Wagenblast's radio voice and pieces together what it needs to say.The next uptown local six train to Parkchester will arrive in three minutes. It sounds good for what it does. |

I've been fascinated with digital voice synthesis for ages ... from the original TI stuff to National Semiconductor's "digi-talker" to things like they're playing with on those clocks. Yes, they are getting better over time, but speech synthesis still doesn't string words together properly owing to nuances like inflection and word placement within a sentence. I dunno ... I kinda preferred the old teeyay "Bzflkwaka booz pripsum iktigoob sprkforb ... bing bong" myself ... made it sound more important. :) |

That's pretty much the way I did it when I wrote my harness racing program in Turbo Pascal for DOS many moons ago. It wasn't hard to be able to have my voice reading off the order of finish after the race with a minimal number of sound files. My uncle scratched his head at how my voice could be reading off the order of finish of a race for which I couldn't pick the winner from the printed past performances-- even though there were only about a dozen sound files that could be combined to read off any order of finish, it sounded reasonably natural.From the top down 6 5 8 3 4 2 1 7 10 9 Time for the 1600 meters One minute fifty-four and six tenths seconds. Second winner on the card for Frank Smith A lot depends upon exactly how the announcer reads the sound clips. It takes a bit of planning and imagination to get it to sound natural. As for size-- I had 1000 horses, 100 trainers, 100 drivers, and various other files. It would all easily fit on one CD. Hard to believe that even with Windows NT the MTA couldn't have fit everything in 2 GB easily. After all, it's a dedicated system-- no kids' pictures or scanned PDF files or MP3 album downloads to clutter the hard disk. |

You should hear the NJ Transit countdown clocks.The next train to .... SUFFERN .... will stop on Track..... H ...... making stops at Ridgewood, Hohokus, Waldwick, Allendale, Ramsey, (different voice) Ramsey Route 17 Station, (original voice again), Mahwahandsuffern. They sound totally artificial. It is amusing how when the 5 is running the 241 program, the 2's voice says "this is a Wakefield-241 St bound 5 local train" and then the 4/5's voice says "the next stop is Jackson Ave". Also, the Flatbush to 241 (5) program does not announce ANY transfers the entire route except for the 2 at E180. Also, when approaching the last stop, the entire announcement is different. It's especially noticeable when arriving at Buhre Ave, since the "this is a Pelham Bay Park bound 6 train" is spoken WAAAY slower than at any other station. |

The different announcement you hear approaching the last stop is actually the original announcement from the first program, before the first (or second) major update which added "local" to many of the announcements. |
