I'm gonna agree with Brian on this one.
Second-hand smoke IS dangerous to your health!
I don't smoke nor do I appreciate "inconsiderate" smokers smoking near me, especially when it's prohibited by law.
Near me, at the Danbury Fair Mall, there are areas clearly marking a a "designated smoking area," which is away from the entrance to the mall. There are signs near the entrance to the mall stating NO SMOKING, but still the inconsiderated fucking assholes have to be puffing away on their fucking cancer sticks right in front of the fucking entrance! That, to me, is utter disrespect of the law and fellow citizens! Those are the asshole that need to be given more than one summons.
One summons for smoking and the second for being an inconsiderate asshole!

Well, I never said it wasn't harmful, just that it doesn't freak me out. Now, I do agree smokers should be considerate and smoke where they are not affecting others, or in designated spots. If I happen to be standing around a smoker I don't freak out about it. Quite frankly, I worry more about the fumes from the diesels I sometimes need to stand near at work more than I worry about second hand smoke. But that is JMHO.

I don't like a lot of the 'nanny' laws, but I don't have a problem with laws banning smoking in enclosed areas of private property (offices and restaurants) and other enclosed public areas. I don't really agree with banning in in outdoor publicly-accessible areas, where it should be at the discretion of the property owners (in the case of transit, obviously it's the state). And I completely disagree with it when it comes to parks and beaches (not playgrounds). What they should do instead is actually enforce the littering laws against the inconsiderate bastards throwing their butts wherever they happen to fall instead of properly disposing of them.

Why do people keep saying that the Governor "bans smoking on LIRR & Metro North platforms"? Isn't it rather that the legislature passed a law or an authorization for the MTA agencies to ban smoking? The Governor may have signed legislation but I doubt if he has any power to "ban" anything other than smoking in his office or residence.

But the governor had the option of vetoing the legislation. He had the final say on the issue. IMO Harry Truman was right: the "buck" always stops at the top.

Once it's law, people will become empowered and call out the smokers, and like you say, some smokers will push back but they won't have that permission to smoke there anymore.

I'm glad I quit smoking; it was actually fun when I smoked.

My father was a heavy smoker, started at 15, dropped dead of a double myocardial attack at 62, two weeks before my 21st birthday in July 1969.

The Indians used tobacco for their religious ceremonys, it was the white man who used tobacco to sell.
