Gov. Cuomo bans smoking on LIRR & Metro North platforms

Governor Andrew Cuomo today appears to be picking up where Mayor Bloomberg left off when it comes to banning smoking forever, everywhere, all the time.

The governor’s office just sent out a notice that smoking is now banned on all outdoor MTA platforms–including the LIRR. This was already the case for MTA platforms in the city, of course.

“It is important that commuters are not unwillingly subject to the dangers of second-hand smoke while waiting on train platforms,” the governor is quoted saying in a statement. “Exposure to second-hand smoke can lead to serious health problems for non-smokers and this law will make outdoor MTA train platforms, ticketing and boarding areas a cleaner, healthier place for all commuters.”

The law is set to take affect in 90 days. State Senator Charles Fuschillo, a co-sponsor of the bill, called it “an important health initiative.” Fuschillo also supported the anti-texting-while-driving bill the governor recently passed. The bill is set to take affect in 90 days.

You very well might be right. I made my comment based on this line in the OP: "Governor Andrew Cuomo today appears to be picking up where Mayor Bloomberg left off when it comes to banning smoking forever, everywhere, all the time."

I know it was banned in the subway portions forever, but I don't remember seeing no smoking signs on the el platforms like you have on the subway platforms.

I would think that it would apply only where Amtrak uses the facilities of a "host" railroad such as MetroNorth (New Haven, New Rochelle, Yonkers etc).

If the facility is owned by Amtrak then it would not apply.

I agree...there shouldn't be any smoking on the platforms.......this is a big concern when you're on a crowded paltform and someone lights up and you have no where to move to. Do you think the smoker cares? NO...they don't...they do as they please without any concern about the person(s) next to them.

I recall reading an article in Trains about someone who had a summer job working with a lineside weed-spraying crew. As they sprayed tracks running along a highway median, they discovered the median was entirely covered with cigarette butts.

On Amtrak long distance trains, announcements are made when approaching crew change stations to alert addicted passengers that the train is approaching a smoking stop.
That's my cue to get my camera out and step outside for a possible photo op.

quote from the link that Mr. Eisenstein posted:
Passengers may smoke on station platforms at longer stops as announced by train crews.

Passengers must remain next to the train, ready to re-board immediately upon hearing the sound of the locomotive horn and the "all aboard" calls from Amtrak employees.
Smoking stops may be shortened or eliminated entirely if the train is operating late.
State or local laws may prohibit smoking on station platforms.

I don't know how accurate this is but I heard that the original "no spitting" ordinances were related to the outbreak of the Spanish Flu around 1918.

To this day the Local 32BJ contract has a clause that states that cleaners are not responsible to clean spittoons. I guess spitting declined as the use of chewing tobacco declined
