Common sense, maybe? A road like Queens Blvd that has four roadways, all divided, it's obvious while making your turn where the opposing directions of traffic are. Unless knocked down, there are signs, there's paint on the road, also visible; white for the right shoulder, yellow for the left in the direction of travel...even the traffic ON the road will give you a clue, since opposing traffic will be STOPPED at the signal where you're turning!

If there's a divider separating traffic going in the same direction then an observant driver can see how wide this road he's about to turn on to is, and will act appropriately, no matter how unfamiliar they are with the area.

As I said, I didn't let the GPS direct me onto the wrong side of the roadway because I was in my own neighborhood at the time just testing it and knew exactly where I was.

I was merely hypothesizing that someone unfamiliar with the roads on a dark or foggy night could have gotten misled onto the wrong side had ther been no parked cars to give him a clue.

I was on the BQE going during a heavy rainstorm. I was in the left lane when a car in the opposite direction hit a puddle and totally blinded my windshield for about five seconds. Although I couldn't see one inch ahead of me I kept on going at a constant speed because I knew there was no one directly in front of me. Had I hit my brakes to slow down, if there was a car behind, he would have slammed into me because if I had zero visibility, there was a good chance that he had no visibility also.

No, because the only guarantee that you get is this road WILL take you to Manhattan, Arlington or whatever the sign says. If I were going somewhere else, I'd make sure I know whether the road was good. The sign would give you a route number or something.

IMO bridges should not be used as control cities.

I don't remember the name of the street. It was the one on the southern side of the Mall. The monument was visible until you were within a few blocks of it.

Jefferson Drive? It's one way. Eastbound. (I.e. away from the monument!)

Okay you probably meant Independence Avenue, but...

When I reached 14th Street, the left lane suddenly became a left turn only lane with no advance warning saying Arlington. I thought I needed to turn right but the center and left lanes were both turning left and I couldn't get out.

So you thought you wanted to turn right, and so got into the left-hand lane? Not to mention that if you do mean Independence, you can go straight on from any lane, and I sincerely hope no-one tried making any turns from the center lane.

Oh, and unless you were driving a bus, it's illegal to turn left there. So unsurprisingly, it's not signed for Arlington.

Anyway I didn't think I would end up on the Bridge and thought I could just make a right on the next block.

So suddenly you aren't in the left-hand lane any more. Which is a shame, seeing as your round-the-block strategy would have worked, had you turned left at C St SW (the signalized intersection you pass through between Independence and the bridge).

In the nicest possible way, I think some inaccuracies have crept into your memory here. But let's look on the bright side: there's a cloverleaf at the other side of the bridge. So however you ended up there, turning round will have been easy.
