I don't remember the name of the street. It was the one on the southern side of the Mall. The monument was visible until you were within a few blocks of it.Jefferson Drive? It's one way. Eastbound. (I.e. away from the monument!) Okay you probably meant Independence Avenue, but... When I reached 14th Street, the left lane suddenly became a left turn only lane with no advance warning saying Arlington. I thought I needed to turn right but the center and left lanes were both turning left and I couldn't get out. So you thought you wanted to turn right, and so got into the left-hand lane? Not to mention that if you do mean Independence, you can go straight on from any lane, and I sincerely hope no-one tried making any turns from the center lane. Oh, and unless you were driving a bus, it's illegal to turn left there. So unsurprisingly, it's not signed for Arlington. Anyway I didn't think I would end up on the Bridge and thought I could just make a right on the next block. So suddenly you aren't in the left-hand lane any more. Which is a shame, seeing as your round-the-block strategy would have worked, had you turned left at C St SW (the signalized intersection you pass through between Independence and the bridge). In the nicest possible way, I think some inaccuracies have crept into your memory here. But let's look on the bright side: there's a cloverleaf at the other side of the bridge. So however you ended up there, turning round will have been easy. |
