When the DEs and DMs were purchased. there was also a weight issue. They were far heavier than an off the shelf locomotive. One can only wonder why the LIRR went that route.

Those descriptions are not mine. They are the manufacturers descriptions. Again - you mention seating. The criteria used to call the NJT cars multi-levels was that the could accommodate both high and low platforms. Can the Chicago area cars accommodate both? Who built them?

Highliner IIs recently delivered EMUs based on RTA gallery coaches on diesel hauled Metra trains same vendor as most recent. again designed for high level emergency traps

South Shore Line EMUs very similar to Highliner IIs but traps used at stations east of Gary except South Bend Terminal

Interesting. Those would be the ones with automatic trapdoors, then. I always wanted to see trapdoors raised and lowered with the push of a button; would have helped on the NEC during low-platform days to be sure (but then you'd have to train idiots not to stand on the trapdoor while it's going up).

No it isn't. The NJT multilevels will clear wherever a P32AC-DM clears; they're the same height above rail. There might be problems relating to third rail clearance vis-à-vis low platform steps, but such cars ran in and out of GCT for ages . . .

Penn has third rail too, and they run there. So unless there's a big difference in the contact rail height, there's no problem.

IIRC MARC's Penn line is all high platform and their two other lines are all low platform.

The NJT ones have a horrid door design that guarantees slow ingress/egress. People jam up where stairways meet to go through a single-width door. Vestibule doors get less use. Also, no luggage racks on lower level.

NJT does not bad how slow ingress/egress slows their trains - LIRR does.

LIRR has some custom cab-signalling and 7 aspect speed control. An NJT engine could probably run, but not optimally. OK for a Saturday fan trip, but nothing else.

An FL9 ran to Greenport with orange Bombardier coaches around 20 years ago.
A P32DM pulled an Amfleet to Shea Stadium about 15 years ago.

There is.
LIRR GP-38's were banned from the 3 fantrips in the 1990's that visited MN due to 3rd rail issues.

Conn DOT ex VRE coaches won't clear MN 3rd rail either, but some how or other must have run thru Penn Station to relocate them from DC to Connecticut.

I don't know what you'd call the GO Transit (Toronto) cars, but they have doors, and seating, on the lower level; seats on the mid and upper levels.

They are very similar. West of Hudson Comet-II's that MTA owned now run east of Hudson.

Also 4 blue-striped Comets went to the west side (and came back) some years ago.

Not necessarily. Vertical clearance is one thing, radius and side clearances are another. vertical radius is yet another issue.

Every recent pic of Perryville I've seen shows low platforms. Same goes for Aberdeen, Edgewood, West Baltimore, and (formerly?) Halethorpe (supposed to have gotten high platforms maybe by now).

They actually should fit, they are 14'6" same height as FL-9 or M2/4/6 and with corner notches should fit even on outer tracks.
the LIRR C-1's only fit track 1 and 2(center tracks) in park Avenue tunnel their corners would hit roof on outside tracks due to curvature

There have been gallery cars on the San Francisco-San Jose route since SP days.

And maybe one day they'll get something that's lightweight, delivers great acceleration, and provides faster service that attracts riders in that corridor.

Whatcha talkin' bout, Willis? The 35-mph average speed is typical of most commuter operations. Electrifying and using MUs will not improve that time—not because the MUs could out-accelerate a locomotive-hauled push-pull train, but because of "safety".

Center Moriches could easily be reopened, it's just that there's no demand for a new station there. Mastic-Shirley & Speonk Yard are the reasons why LIRR service runs slightly more frequently between Patchogue and Speonk.

If you're talking about NJT's multilevels they should be able to run anywhere south of Harlem, not sure about the C3's though.

Back in the day, they used to have locomotives with six axles, so they would accelerate faster. Those cars didn't have cab cars either, so the locomotive had to run around the train at each end of the line.



I kinda like the steps on gallery cars. If steps were good enough for my ancestors, they're good enough for me.

Bah. It's proven to be a social experiment that's way too expensive. What they should have done was ripped out all the high platforms that they originally had and converted them to low.

That doesn't make it easier to get on a train. Nobody's able to get on a Metra train in Chicago? And that's aside from the fact that even back then, 70-percent low floor would have been feasible for EMUs.

How do the wheelchair ramps at low platform stations work? Does the train have to make a double stop at those stations to accommodate the wheelchair passenger?

I've never seen a mini-high actually used. Might have to be a double-stop if at least one door doesn't platform there.

This is a pic of the mini-high at Harriman NY on the Port Jervis line. Even has extra horizontal clearance for freight trains, so it'd probably need a bridge plate.

Freight cars are actually narrower than passenger cars and on flat cars would reach above a platform. only specialty cars like well cars with oversized loads would not clear (high and wide)
