I remember from a few years ago the earthquake machine episode where the Mythbusters tried to do an earthquake like Tesla did in lower New York City, only they did it on a bridge they got some results with an oscillation on the bridge but I believe it was deemed unworkable to make an earthquake from an oscillator, but Tesla did it in his lab with the oscillator bolted to a beam which was deep in the ground causing the sand to resonate fast enough to cause an earthquake like movement of the ground, these guys botched the experiment. Let's say that 76th Street station existed, and in the transit fan's wildest dreams - as a full station with working tracks, platforms and signals, and even working light bulbs!

In a pure practical sense, what use would the station hold?

As a local station with its track switch layout, it is too cumbersome to be a terminal station.

The TA would probably not open the station to passenger traffic, say for the C-train to terminate there. What would happen during the midnight hours - a two-stop shuttle to a station that would get very little ridership?

As a local station with its track switch layout, using it for train layup or storage space - others have said the track layout is cumbersome for train moves.

I'm just wondering, even if the 76th Street existed (as a fully usable station) what would be the practical benefit to the average subway rider?

Mike

I keep trying to tell them that but nobody pays attention. What is interesting though, is that some early proposals for the IND Fulton St Line called for it to continue out Fulton St under the existing J Line structure and emerge just past the Crescent St station and connect to the Liberty Av structure from north of l Liberty Av instead of south of it which is where it connects at present. I suspect that that is the reason why the first portion of the IND ended at the odd location of Rockaway Av since the planners probably weren't quite sure where the line was going to go once it reached the ENY area.

Actually, the wall at the end of track is concrete not cinderblock. The wall at the end of the tunnels for A7 and A8 yard leads is cinderblock however. According to some retired NYCTA employees who worked construction flagging in the area during the construction of Grant Av, before the concrete wall was put up, there was a temporary wooden wall. A map I have seen somewhere from 1950, indicates that while the "mainline" portion of the Pitkin Av subway was intended to have connected to the LIRR ROW in the area of Aqueduct in 1948, by the time of the 1950 map those plans had been abandoned and the connection we now know as Liberty Junction was shown. ERA Sprague Library has a contract book showing the connection from Grant as far as Hudson St and past the Hudson Interlocking, there is a note on the track map that indicates existing BMT signaling was to be used beyond that point. Of course once it was decided to build Liberty Jct, new signaling to accommodate the new interlocking became necessary.

I know. It was supposed to go in either direction, straight to 76th, as well as the dual contracts end of the Liberty El. But the original plan WAS abolished after the war when construction restarted again. The idea to go straight was abolished, and only one of the two planned forks was taken.

I would think that the sewers would have been above the subway at that point since the topography that is shown for the proposed construction of the area seems to indicate that 76 S station would have been deeper than Euclid since the A7 and A8 yard leads would rise above the mainline infrastructure to access Pitkin Yd. The Pitkin Av "mainline" also dips below both the leads to Grant Av station as well as underneath the K3-4 and K5 yard leads that does put 76 St station pretty deep and probably below any sewer work in the area. Also someone posted on this p forum a few years ago that his father had observed what appeared to be major street construction in the area of Conduit Blvd in the late 1940s and while this may not necessarily have any relation to actual subway construction, it may indicate that any sewer work done in the area may have been done at that time rather than at a later date.

See my post on this topic. As of 1948 when Euclid opened, it was still intended to have the subway continue out Pitkin and also have the connection to the BMT Fulton El. From a map I saw showing proposed subway extensions, that plan seems to have been abandoned by 1950 since it shows what eventually became Liberty Jct.

Some documentation I have seen seems to indicate it was a little more than just an "excavation."
