Let's say that 76th Street station existed, and in the transit fan's wildest dreams - as a full station with working tracks, platforms and signals, and even working light bulbs!

In a pure practical sense, what use would the station hold?

As a local station with its track switch layout, it is too cumbersome to be a terminal station.

The TA would probably not open the station to passenger traffic, say for the C-train to terminate there. What would happen during the midnight hours - a two-stop shuttle to a station that would get very little ridership?

As a local station with its track switch layout, using it for train layup or storage space - others have said the track layout is cumbersome for train moves.

I'm just wondering, even if the 76th Street existed (as a fully usable station) what would be the practical benefit to the average subway rider?

Mike
