I say yes. I know some folk are loud or rude while on the phone (I'm in South Jersey, so no need to tell me anything bout that, heh), but some do know their "inside voice". Me, I usually text my people, and sometimes use the phone. I actually get a little nervous (Especially after what some of ya'll would do with a person on a phone!) when i'm the only one talking on the phone, on a train or bus, even though i'm not loud on the phone.

But anyway, what I really wanna say is, ITS NEW YORK CITY for crying out loud! Millions of people, all in a generally loud city, try to deal with it! And lets be real, half the time the trains are too crowded or loud to hear any conversation anyway...down here, if you ride the Broad Street Subway, you damn sure aren't gonna have a quiet conversation, since those trains are louder than the trains in NYC (Commuter rail trains included). Also, some folk down here are loud already, so i'm used to it. I don't mind or care, I can't change their voice level, and telling them shut up (or something politer along that line) might make things worse....for YOU. Its NYC transit, its not a forever ride, its not the loud person's house/apartment and neither is it yours, expect it and deal with it...unless you decide to drive, or do something most NYC folk seem to be immune from doing, walking long distances!

And where are the freedom of speech people now? Now that the person is just on the phone (loud or not) and you don't wanna hear, all of a sudden you feel you wanna take that freedom back and ask if the person shuts up for your comfort? But doesn't that person have a right to talk on the phone, about whatever they like, whether you like it or not?

SEPTA started the Quiet Car program, not because they needed to, but because they wanted to, in response to the requests of people wanting such a train car. SEPTA has the right to give those people the finger if they wanted to, but they didn't. Quiet cars are EXTRA, meaning its a want by the people, not a need. So now ya'll feel the want, to get someone off the phone who needs or wants to use it and has the right to use it? Give me a break *rolls eyes*

How about we just all agree to disagree, that folk that don't wanna hear it have the right to feel that way (I think a polite "Can you speak softer, please" would be better to say to them than a sarcastic/smart assed answer, if you feel the need for them to quiet down, but respect their right to talk!), and that the person on the phone, regardless of how loud or quiet they are and what they talk about, has the right to do what they're doing (They must also be respectful, with the voice level and what they talk about, in comparison to the others on the train. And suppose the person they're talking to has less-than-good hearing or a language barrier like with the Chinese food conversations, possibly meaning a louder voice and repeated messages? Anyone ever thought of that?). In the end, regardless of what your opinion is, its all about respect, on BOTH sides of the story.

My post was like an essay, I know, but I thought it was high time I say what I thought of this topic.
