Wow, that sounds exactly like my memories. When I was in my 20's, my friends and I would hang out in the vestibules of the diesel coaches on the ride to Patchogue. It was always great when the platforms over the stairways would be opened up east of Bay Shore, because then the doors would be open in the vestibules. On some Montauk bound trains we would grab some beers and hang out in the last vestibule of the last car. Sometimes they would put two GP38-2's on the front, and there would be nothing on the back of trains to Montauk. We'd have are own personal party back there, and you would get the occasional commuter (or conductor) joining us for a spell while they smoked their cigarettes. The vestibules of the old diesel trains were like the informal smoking areas. Technically, I don't think people were really allowed to smoke out there, but the conductors never said anything as they passed through. Man where those things fun to ride. They were rolling disasters, but man was something lost when they were taken out of service. I always forget how much I miss them until I hear a story like yours, and it reminds me of all the good times I had on those trains. |
