Yes, when it was done ad hoc, it was always the most fun.
I remember when my friend and I decided to ride out to Montauk once, we hung out in the vestible from Bay Shore and east (that's when the doors would be left open in the vestibules). What was so cool was that just before Hampton Bays, they would open the doors on the other side too, as Hampton Bays' platform is on the north side of the tracks as opposed to the south like most of the others. what was so cool about that is that the rest of the ride out to Montauk was open on BOTH sides of the train. Probably the closest thing you could have gotten to the old gate cars on the subway.
I remember the conductor was so friendly, he stopped to chat with us a few times between stations.
