Once, in the early `70s, me and my buddy Winky decided to take a morning train from Islip out to Hampton Bays (where we found a cool little go kart track but that's another story). Turned out the train had a couple cars dedicated to some tour group. It was like, first two or three cars were for regular passengers, then the tour group cars. A decently long train. So we ambled through the train til the last car. Whaddya know? It was empty. We had the car to ourselves all the way out to Hampton Bays! Rail Simulator be damned! Hell, like you were talking about, we had the exquisite pleasure of standing at the open back door of a real train, out in the sunshine, nothing behind us, watching the miles slip away into infinity. In retrospect, the absolute coolest thing about that ride was that it was completely ad hoc. No planning, a regularly scheduled passenger train that we happened to catch on the spur of the moment. You `n me bro, we was very very fortunate. |
