Think of the LIRR. It filed for bankruptcy in 1949 & in 1950 had two terrible train wrecks that killed over 100 people. In time, it slowly regained stability under state supervision. Bankruptcy ended in 1954 which began a 12 year plan of stability. in 1966 Gov. Rockefeller purchased the LIRR outright from the cash strapped PRR and formed the MCTA later shortened to the MTA. The point of all this is that the LIRR would not exist if it weren't for state (taxpayer) $$$ coming in to save the day.
