Aside from the excess and unfair taxation, the biggest hit the railroads took was from the Eisenhauer Interstate System. Ike got the idea from seeing the autobahn when he was in Germany. On came the trucks and affordable cars and many never looked back. As far as firemen working on diesel engines, that was a collective bargaining issue fought for years (and quite successfully) by the RR unions to keep the firemen. I believe that practice was called featherbedding. But in time they went away shortly followed by the caboose. |
