There was a retired Metro-North person on here who claimed that Metro-North by law could not run but so far out of NYC. Rensselaer is much further away from GCT than either Greenport or Montauk is from NYP. The same person also claimed that this (imaginary) distance limitation impeded any possible restoration of passenger rail service to Chatham via the Harlem Line. There's those claims blown to smithereens.

Even with the steps and trapdoors on the Shoreliners, still will not be easy getting in and out at Rhinecliff and Hudson.
